It wouldn’t be a Ryan Murphy series without a killer lineup of guest stars, and ABC’s upcoming “Doctor Odyssey” has a great one. Country music legend Shania Twain will guest star on the drama, which premieres Sept. 26.
Twain even briefly appears in the first teaser for the drama. “Doctor, welcome aboard the Odyssey,” Capt. Robert Massey (Don Johnson) says in the two-minute long clip. “This ship is heaven. Our mission is to preserve the dream, and that’s why you’re here.”
“I’m in,” Dr. Max Bankman (Joshua Jackson) says in response.
As they have this exchange, “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” by the Beach Boys plays in the background as a heart rate monitor can be heard increasing in speed. When the monitor is at its most rapid, the drama cranks up.
In rapid succession, the teaser shows Dr. Bankman performing CPR, someone falling off the railing of the ship,...

Exclusive: K.J. Apa (Riverdale) has entered production in the UK on Falling, a new romantic comedy-drama from Gulfstream Pictures.
The project marks Apa’s third with Gulfstream, on the heels of the motorcycle racing pic One Fast Move, which premieres on Prime Video August 8, and the rom-com The Last Summer for Netflix.
Written and directed by Colin Krisel and James Krisel (Last Moment of Clarity), Falling centers on Jack (Apa), who while quick-witted, charming, and avoidant, finally risks opening his heart when he starts dating Jillian. He never expected, though, that his best friend Johnny would fall for her, too.
Gulfstream is producing and fully financing in association with Luber Roklin Entertainment, having previously teamed with the company to produce One Fast Move. Producers include Mike Karz and Bill Bindley of Gulfstream Pictures, Lena Roklin and Matt Luber of Luber Roklin, and Piers Tempest of Tempo Productions. Apa, Tom Salentine,...

Mariah Carey is the quintessential crossover artist, with a catalog of hits that bridges the gap between pop, R&b, hip-hop, and house music. Though the so-called elusive chanteuse has shied away from the latter genre in recent years, she seems headed back into the fold. Just days after hopping on an R&b remix of Muni Long’s “Made for Me,” Mariah has dropped a deep house mix of “Portrait,” the closing track from her underrated 2018 album Caution.
Clocking in at a whopping 16 minutes, “Portrait” is the singer’s longest remix to date, including completely reworked vocals and snippets from her new Audible podcast, detailing how she approaches the remix process. “We usually just let the beat be anything,” she explains. “It didn’t have to be specifically in the same key or the same vibe…as the original. So you can just be free.”

If you are a TV fanatic, you've likely watched your fair share of CW shows. So, you already know that if you've seen an actor in one CW series, you've likely seen them again in another. This means you're probably already familiar with Melissa Roxburgh but don't even realize it.
Starting out in installments of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies, the actress transitioned into broadcast television the following year.
To her credit, Melissa Roxburgh has become somewhat of a sci-fi siren of the small screen, often appearing in roles on shows with fantastical elements like time travel or supernatural monsters.
In recent years, she's gained notoriety, having developed a relationship with Netflix the same way she did with the CW. However, beyond being a serial series guest star, Roxburgh has had a handful of significant film roles that have shown she is a powerhouse of talent in her own right.

Titans of the faith-based filmmaking industrial complex they helped to create, Kingdom Story Company founders Andrew and Jon Erwin built their brand on the Christian rock biopics “I Still Believe” and “I Can Only Imagine,” ultra-benign stories of faith, loss, and profit that rely on powerful songwriting to compensate for sermon-like storytelling, and frame their subject’s artistic success as both a testament to their faith and a megaphone for the word of Jesus Christ. Absent the rigor or artistry of secular comps like “Love & Mercy” and “Coal Miner’s Daughter” (but also absent the Wikipedia-driven ghoulishness of more recent examples like “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “I Wanna Dance with Somebody”), these movies are happy to function as feature-length commercials for the musicians they were made to honor, just as they’re happy to offer halos to the people who inspired them.

The month of April seemingly sailed by with far too many moderate releases, and the month ends this weekend with more of the same. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino returns with the sexy tennis drama “Challengers,” starring the powerhouse trio of Zendaya (“Euphoria”), Josh O’Connor (“The Crown”) and Mike Faist (“West Side Story”) as superstar tennis players who fall into a competitive love triangle. This is Zendaya’s first movie after “Dune: Part Two,” and it will be a real test for her as a box office star, since sports dramas can be hit or miss. “Challengers” really is riding on her popularity to avoid the pitfalls of the genre.
Tennis has had an especially tough time at the box office, as seen by Will Smith‘s Oscar-winning turn in the 2021 release “King Richard,” about the father of Venus and Serena Williams,...

Oddly, April is going to be a month full of genre films, but it’s also a month that might make some wonder whether any of the new movies can open with more than $20 million, putting theaters back into the place they were back in January and February. “Civil War” (A24 – April 12)
Considering how Alex Garland‘s previous films “Men” and “Annihilation” were received, it’s hard to believe that his edgy political apocalyptic thriller could be one of the biggest movies of this month, but it’s also likely to be A24’s first movie to hit #1 on the weekend after 10 years of releases. Starring Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Nick Offerman, Jesse Plemons and Wagner Moura, Garland’s latest premiered at the SXSW Film and TV Festival, where it received mostly positive reviews. Ordinary Angels. Photo Credit: Allen Fraser Ordinary Angels is the latest film to feature Hilary Swank playing a real-life character, and it’s directed by Jon Gunn, who’s made a name for himself both writing and directing films that tell real-life stories. He’s written American Underdog, the film about former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner; I Still Believe, a film based on the life of Christian singer Jeremy Camp; and Jesus Revolution, based on a true story, while the last movie he directed, The Case for Christ, was also based on a true story. According to Swank, Gunn was the perfect choice for a movie like Ordinary Angels, and she really appreciated his approach to filmmaking. My favorite scene in “Dig,” the series finale of FX’s Hulu series Reservation Dogs, finds Devery Jacobs’ Elora joining D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai’s Bear sitting by Old Man Fixico’s casket.
Bear is meditating on nothing less than the impermanence of life, which is also what Elora wants to discuss. Specifically, she has to tell Bear that she’s exiting their hometown, departing Okern and going to college. She knows, though, that Bear’s mother (Sarah Podemski’s Rita) has recently told him she’s taking a job in Oklahoma City. Everybody is leaving Bear, and Elora worries about how her friend will take the news.
The emotion is bursting out of Elora. She wants to explain, to apologize, to justify. Bear asks her to pause. She looks at him with concern. He looks down. Pondering. She’s wondering if Bear’s about to break down. We’re wondering if...

Mariah Carey is famous for topping the charts. In fact, she holds the record for the most number-one hits by a solo artist on the Billboard Hot 100 (19), and she became the first artist ever to hit number-one in four different decades. But of course no one can send every song they’ve recorded to the top of the charts. A number of Carey’s greatest hits didn’t reach the summit, but they belong in any discussion of her storied career. Scroll down for our countdown of her best non-chart-toppers.
Early in her career it was hard to find Carey singles anywhere but number-one. The first four from her very first album reached that position. The 1990s continued at that same pace: a whopping 14 of her chart leaders were released in that decade. The 2000s were less auspicious for her: she had career and tabloid trouble when her movie “Glitter” and its accompanying soundtrack underperformed.

Apple TV+‘s Ted Lasso may be a comedy about a football coach and his team, but it’s also a series about believing, and the Season 3 trailer for the fan-favorite is doing just that. You can officially mark you calendars because “Ted Lasso” Season 3 will premiere on Wednesday, March 15 with episodes dropping weekly, Apple TV+ announced Tuesday.
The streamer also unveiled a minute-long teaser that includes the whole crew crafting “Believe” signs for the locker room, culminating with Ted (Jason Sudeikis) and Beard (Brendan Hunt) walking in to find them adorned above the lockers. “Well, if seeing is believing, I believe we’ve been seen,” Ted remarks. The teaser is set to “I Still Believe,” a song by British singer-songwriter Frank Turner.
Per the press release, Season 3 finds AFC Richmond facing ridicule with media predictions putting them in last place in the Premier League after Nate (Nick Mohammed), now dubbed “the wonder kid,” defected at the end of Season 2 to join Rupert (Anthony Head) at West Ham United. In the wake of Nate’s exit, Roy (Brett Goldstein) is now assistant coach alongside Beard.

Living in the shadow of Daniel’s suicide, the group of friends have worked and struggled to stay united as Season 2 has unfolded, but the finale marked a shift in their dynamic. And [Spoiler Alert], Bear (D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai), Elora (Devery Jacobs), Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis), and Cheese (Lane Factor) finally made good on their promise, as the club of Indigenous teens who refer to themselves as the Rez Dogs, reached the West coast. Editor’s Note: Spoilers for the season finale of “Reservation Dogs” Season 2 are included.
The sophomore season of Sterlin Harjo’s “Reservation Dogs” felt a lot like the final season of “Atlanta,” with an emphasis on strong bottle episodes that ultimately compelled the Res Dogs to seek their own individual identities. But the season finale, appropriately titled “I Still Believe,” ultimately drew the foursome back together to find strength and faith in their friendship. A trip to California, a meeting with white Jesus, and a trip to the beach was enough for the Res Dogs to finally close the chapter on what sparked the series in the first place and enter Season 3 with an entirely clean slate. That’s exciting.

In the actioner written and directed by Kelly Blatz, a dishonorably discharged soldier (Apa) seeks out his estranged father to help him pursue his dream of racing Supersport motorcycles. While training, he meets a small-town aspiring singer who begins to break down the walls his father’s absence had built up. Mike Karz and Bill Bindley are producing through their Gulfstream Pictures banner, in association with Matt Luber and Lena Roklin of Luber Roklin Entertainment.

Just in time for summer, Diana Ross has released the party-ready jam, “Turn Up the Sunshine” — her new collaboration with Australian multi-instrumentalist Kevin Parker, better known as Tame Impala. The song is slated to appear on the upcoming soundtrack for the animated film, Minions: The Rise of Gru.
The groove-laden track — written by producing superstar Jack Antonoff, Sam Dew, Patrik Berger and Kevin Parker — evokes the ebullient energy of Ross’ early solo efforts while allowing the 78-year-old superstar to showcase her vocal chops alongside playful instrumentation mixing funk, disco and psychedelic pop.

Riverdale star Kj Apa and 1883 actress Isabel May have nabbed the alien sibling lead roles in the HBO Max live action DC comedy The Wonder Twins.
Apa will play Zan, and May will portray Jayna.
While the plotline is under wraps, Jayna is known for her talent of transforming into an animal, while Zan is a shapeshifter of sorts. The two made their debut on The All-New Super Friends Hour from Hanna-Barbera and then appeared in The World’s Greatest Super Friends, Super Friends, and Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show. Their history: the duo are from the planet Exxor who were being informally trained by the DC superheroes. In a 1977 Super Friends comic book from E. Nelson Bridwell and artist Ramona Fradon, it’s further detailed that the twins were orphaned during a plague and adopted by the alien Exorians. Along the way, they’re given Gleek as a pet.

‘Father Stu’ Review: Mark Wahlberg and Mel Gibson Form an Unholy Alliance in Sloppy Religious Biopic
A faith-based drama co-starring Mark Wahlberg and Mel Gibson that was written and directed by Gibson’s 31-year-old girlfriend, Rosalind Ross (whose only previous credits are a short film that she co-wrote in 2014 and a guest appearance on one of Laura Ingraham’s demonic talk shows), “Father Stu” doesn’t sound like a movie so much as it does a biblical exercise in faith and forgiveness. Alas, watching this messy-as-hell biopic about a foul-mouthed boxer priest requires a Christ-like amount of both, and inspires precious little of either in return.
Of course, as an agnostic Jew who wouldn’t go within 10 feet of Gibson unless I was wearing one of those padded bomb suits from “The Hurt Locker,” I’m not exactly the target audience for a movie that aspires to feel like a “Passion of the Christ” remake directed by David O. Russell. But as a critic who’s...

Arriving just in time to be an attractive four-quadrant option for family outings to the megaplexes during the holiday season — provided, of course, that the latest Covid surge doesn’t cause another round of movie theater shuttering — “American Underdog” is a thoroughly predictable yet hugely entertaining sports biopic that is bound to please almost anyone who’s not a sourball cynic or a snarky critic.
Much of its appeal stems from Zachary Levi’s winningly sincere portrayal of Kurt Warner, the football phenom whose improbable ascent from grocery clerk to NFL superstar by way of a warmup in the Arena League is the sort of true-life story that seems almost too good to be true, even when it’s told as well as it is here.
But while Levi undeniably is the most valuable player, he likely wouldn’t score quite so impressively without a strong supporting-player team that includes Anna Paquin as Brenda,...

On Thursday at CinemaCon, Lionsgate said that it is opening the Erwin Brothers-directed American Underdog on Christmas Day. The pic was previously set to open on December 10, with the release timed to the climax of the NFL season.

More than a dozen of music’s biggest stars, from Beyoncé to H.E.R., would love an Emmy to add to their award shelves.
A Variety review of the 535 entries throughout the Television Academy’s seven music categories reveals a surprising number of A-list singers, songwriters and music directors apparently eager for TV’s top honor. Among them:
H.E.R. (with Josiah Bassey) is entered for original song for “Hold Us Together” from the Disney Plus movie “Safety.” She won the Oscar earlier this year and already has four Grammys, so an Emmy win would put her three-fourths of the way to a fabled Egot. Beyoncé is entered for music direction and original song (both with Derek Dixie) for “Black Is King,” her musical film companion to “The Lion King” (also on Disney Plus). The song “Black Parade” won her a Grammy earlier this year for best R&b performance.

Damon Wolf, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group’s chief marketing officer, is exiting his role at the studio, according to a memo Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake sent to staff on Friday.
Wolf also announced his own departure in a note obtained by TheWrap. Both letters explain that he and Drake had been in conversations over the past year about him moving on to his next chapter but that he remained on through the studio’s re-imagining process and through the pandemic.
No replacement has been named for his position.
Wolf joined Lionsgate in June 2018 after working at TriStar Pictures, Screen Gems and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions. Wolf in his role led marketing campaigns for Lionsgate’s “Knives Out,” “Bombshell” and the “John Wick” franchise, among others.
Lionsgate last December restructured its film group under four new verticals, including strategy and innovation, marketing, distribution and content, with Wolf assigned to lead the marketing vertical.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars, which are set to air April 25 live on ABC.
The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention.
This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast.

If your UK lockdown viewing is starting to feel a bit barrel-scrapey (there are only so many times one can rewatch The Office: An American Workplace without turning into a Dwight Shrute bobblehead) then Amazon has some potentially tasty options for the coming month. US sci-fi Soulmates starring Succession‘s Sarah Snook (pictured) arrived on AMC last year and makes its UK debut on the 8th, while Rosamund Pike-starring con-artist thriller I Care a Lot, also starring Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage, has been picking up some great reviews.
Here’s that, plus new weekly episodes of American Gods, The Expanse, The Stand (via Starzplay), and some tennis if you enjoy that kind of thing. We’ll update this guide as new release dates are confirmed and changes are made.
