Ryan Gaur is a freelance film, TV, music, soccer and video games writer specializing in animation. Since 2021, he has been covering the global animation industry, following two years writing about hip-hop and European soccer. His particular passion lies with the works of Studio Ghibli. He has reviewed, ranked, analyzed, and deconstructed work from the famous animation house while also interviewing some of its famous talent, such as “The Tale of the Princess Kaguya” producer Yoshiaki Nishimura. He has interviewed leaders in the Western industry, such as “Spider-verse” director Peter Ramsay and Pixar director and exec Domee Shi, as well as Disney stalwart and “Aladdin” animator Eric Goldberg. He also has a passion for shining a light on the undercurrents of the film industry, service studios and film markets that keep the industry ecosystem healthy. Based in the U.K., Gaur is focused on bringing European animation to the fore as it increasingly provides experimentation and boundary-pushing in the medium often missing from American work. Being of South Asian descent, he is keeping a keen eye on the blossoming animation industry in India and Pakistan.
In addition to writing for IndieWire, he has contributed to Rolling Stone, Polygon, IGN, Empire Magazine, OkayPlayer, CartoonBrew, Animation Magazine and Skwigly, writing quick news, in-depth reporting, Q&A interviews, critical analysis, reviews, and more. He graduated with an MPhys masters degree in Applied Physics from Aston University in 2020. Originally from Birmingham, he resides in London, England, and can be found on Twitter @ryangaur.
