Life and career
Babz Chula was born as Barbara Ellen Zuckerman, in Springfield, Massachusetts.[3] She was raised in Jamaica, New York.[4]
She became a popular actress in Canada, starting with her role in the Canadian film My American Cousin. She received the Artistic Achievement Award from the Vancouver Women in Film Society in 1995.[1] She also won acclaim for her community spirit, continuing to act in independent Canadian films while acting in Hollywood films.[5]
In 2008, a group of actors and artists in Vancouver created the Babz Chula Lifeline for Artists Society, which helped raise funds for Chula's cancer treatment.
Her cancer treatments and the final months of her life were the subject of Anne Wheeler's National Film Board of Canada short documentary film, Chi.[6]
Chula died on May 8, 2010 [7] at her home in Vancouver after an eight-year struggle with breast cancer and an unrelated blood cancer. She was surrounded by her husband, cinematographer Larry Lynn, and her three children.[8]
