Barathrum is a Finnish black-doom band, formed in 1990. They originate from Kuopio but have since re-located to Helsinki. The first letters of their full-length albums spell "HEIL SOVA" (referring to the band's frontman, Demonos Sova), which completes their original eight-album plan. However, there have been rumours about a new record ever since the Anno Aspera was released. By now the rumours have turned out to be true, so Barathrum will at least once more enter the studio to record a new album.
Stylistically, the music of Barathrum features mid-tempo songs with distinct influences from the earliest black metal acts, such as Venom and Celtic Frost. The lyrics deal with occult and religious themes, often glorifying the Antichrist, often quite humorously. Grammatically, Demonos Sova's lyrics are twisted, clearly showing that English is not his first language. In fact, albums feature names in Finnish, with words such as Perkele and Saatana (Satan). The band's name is Latin and translates as the "Abyss" or "Under World".
