Usage note: In Australia, "suburbs" are the official postal subdivisions of a city. Inner suburbs are subdivisions within the denser urban areas of the cities and outer suburbs are the postal divisions found in the outer rings of the metropolitan areas, and usually lying within the boundaries of a separate municipality. This differs from British and North American usage, in which the term "suburb" is never applied to central neighbourhoods.

Brisbane, Queensland, Australia has 188 ^[1] suburbs according to the Brisbane City Council. There is no formal system of regions, but Brisbane suburbs are informally grouped by Brisbane residents based on their relation to the Brisbane River and the Brisbane CBD. Generally the following rules apply, Northern Suburbs include suburbs north of the Brisbane River, Southern Suburbs include suburbs south of the Brisbane River. The exceptions are Western Suburbs, which include suburbs north and south of the Brisbane River, but also west of the Brisbane CBD, and Bayside Suburbs which include suburbs along Moreton Bay.

The size of local government areas within cities varies in Australia. The entire metropolitan area of Brisbane is covered by a single municipal council, whereas other cities are divided into varying numbers of municipalities, each of which would cover a number of suburbs.

This category is for those suburbs and bounded localities that formally divide the City of Brisbane as recognised by the Queensland Place Names board (searchable register). The Category:Brisbane localities is for former suburbs, unbounded localities, neighbourhoods etc that are commonly used by residents of Brisbane. Many but not all of these are listed on the Queensland Place Names register.
