Christopher Lynn Boswell (born March 16, 1991) is an American football placekicker for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League (NFL). He was signed by the Houston Texans in 2014 as an undrafted free agent and has also spent time with the New York Giants. He played college football at Rice University.

College

Boswell was a 3-year starter at Rice. With 358 career points, he is second on the all-time Rice scoring list behind ex-NFL wide receiver Jarett Dillard.[1] While at Rice, Boswell was a member of Martel College.[1]

Professional career

Houston Texans

The Texans signed Boswell on May 10, 2014 solely as a kicker to compete with Randy Bullock.[2] However, he did not perform well enough to beat him and was cut on August 29.[3] He was re-signed to the practice squad on September 23, 2014, after Shane Lechler was injured 2 days earlier in a game. He punted 15 times and averaged over 44 yards/punt. Boswell also was quite accurate, landing his punts within the opposing team's 20 yard line 6 times.[4]

New York Giants

On January 7, 2015, Boswell signed a reserve/future contract with the New York Giants.[5] On August 16, 2015, Boswell was waived by the Giants.[6] On September 2, 2015, he was re-signed by the Giants.[7] On September 5, 2015, Boswell was waived after failing to make the final 53 man roster for the New York Giants [8]

Pittsburgh Steelers

Boswell signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers on October 3, 2015, becoming their fourth place kicker in 2015.[9]

Boswell made his NFL debut on October 12, 2015, completing all 3 of his PATs and making his 47-yard field goal attempt in a Monday night victory over the San Diego Chargers.[10]

The following week against the Arizona Cardinals, he was 4/4 on fields goals including kicks of 48, 49, and 51 yards, earning him AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors.[11] He also earned the AFC Special Teams Player of the Month award for the month of December.[12]

On November 8, 2015, Boswell kicked 3 field goals, including the game winner and 3 PATs against the Oakland Raiders.[13][14]

On January 9, 2016, Boswell kicked four field goals in a 18-16 win in the AFC Wild Card game against the Cincinnati Bengals.[15] He successfully kicked a 35 yard game winning field goal with less than 20 seconds remaining in the game.[16] He also became the youngest kicker to make 4 field goals in a postseason game.

The following week, in a loss against the Denver Broncos during the Divisional Round of the playoffs, Boswell tied a franchise record with 7 total field goals completed in the post season. He finished the post season with a 100% success rate and finished the 2015 season with a 92.3 success rate, completing 36 out of 39.[17] He also set another franchise record for most field goals made by a rookie/first-year player.[18]
