Coral Springs High School is a public high school located in Coral Springs, Florida. It is a part of the Broward County Public Schools district. The school has a population of 2385[2] as of May 2013.
Coral Springs has an FCAT school grade of "A" for the 2011-2012 academic year.[3] The school's principal is Susan Leon-Leigh.
The school is known for its annual football games against J. P. Taravella High School, known as the Mayor's Cup, and the Pig Bowl against Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where the losing school's principal must kiss a pig.[4]
Coral Springs High School also hosts the annual Florida high school track meet.
History
Coral Springs High School (CSHS) first opened its doors in 1975 with Paul Proffitt as Principal. Proffitt participated in the original planning of the high school and hand-picked the administration and teachers who would guide the school through the 1980s. During that time, Coral Springs outgrew to its nickname of "The City in the Country", eventually becoming one of the most populous cities in Florida.
Coral Springs High School was the city's first high school. The school originally opened as a collection of portable classrooms at what is now the site of Coral Springs Medical Center, with a student population of some 1,200 students. In 1976, the main building opened at its current location. By the 1980-1981 school year, CSHS was organized into double sessions to accommodate 3,764 students. By the fall of 1981, a second high school - J. P. Taravella High School - was opened, thereby reducing the student population down to 2,400 students.
Academically, CSHS excelled among all secondary schools in the state. By 1984, a state Education Committee had selected CSHS as one of the top seven secondary schools in Florida. By then, over 80% of all graduating seniors attended college. At that time, CSHS accommodated over 3,000 students between the main campus and some 47 portable classrooms. The school boasted many National Merit Scholars, as well as teachers who were recognized statewide - and nationally - as some of the best in their profession.
Athletically, CSHS won the All County Sports Trophy for four consecutive years in the early 1980s. In 1979, the Girls Basketball Team won the state title.[5] After the first 10 years of existence, some 111 trophies had filled the school's trophy cases for individual and team excellence.
The school's chapter of the National Honor Society has been continuously ranked as a golden chapter of distinction by the BCNHS.
In 2011, the school was featured in Morgan Spurlock's documentary film, The Greatest Movie Ever Sold. Spurlock visited the campus and commissioned local illustrator, Michelle Morse, to produce a mural that served as a public work for the school, while also promoting the film's advertising context. In 2013 it was defaced, erasing much of the original artwork.[6]
Demographics
As of 2013, the total student enrollment was 2385. The ethnic makeup of the school was 49% White, 38% Black, 6% Asian or Pacific Islander, 4% Multiracial, and 3% Native American or Native Alaskan.[7]
Notable alumni and attendees
- Cody Brown (Class of 2005), American football player, played collegiate at the University of Connecticut; currently a free agent in the NFL, was drafted in the second round by Arizona Cardinals, also spent time with the Lions, and most recently New York Jets.
- Walter Dix (Class of 2004), American track and field athlete. Seven-time NCAA champion sprinter. 2-time Bronze medalist in 2008 Summer Olympics.
- Laine Selwyn (Class of 1999), Professional basketball player with the Indiana Fever, member of Israel women's national basketball team
- Steve Hutchinson (Class of 1996), American football player, played collegiate at the University of Michigan; currently plays in the National Football League for the Tennessee Titans.
- George LeMieux (Class of 1987), United States Senator from Florida
- Jennifer Schwalbach Smith (Class of 1989), American actress, wife of film director Kevin Smith.
- Jennifer Taylor (née Bini; Class of 1990), American actress best known for playing Chelsea on the CBS television series Two and a Half Men.
