Edith Janet Allen Mayo, more commonly known as Janet Mayo was born on the 28th of April 1915 and died in 1995.[1] She grew up as Janet Simpson in Adelaide. Edith became active in advocating for widows who lost their husbands to war, following the death of her husband Eric Mayo when she was 26.[2] Eric Mayo died in the sinking of the HMAS Sydney while Edith was pregnant with her second and last son.[3] Edith was one of the founding members of the South Australian War Widow's Guild, and later held the position of State Present for over twenty years.[4] After the death of Jessie Vassey in 1966, Edith was elected President of the Australian War Widow's Guild until she retired in 1977.[5]
Awards
On 31 December 1976, Janet Mayo was appointed to the Order of the British Empire - Commander (Civil) for community service. She was awarded an OBE in 1967 for her work as National President, War Widows' Guild of Australia.[6]
