Emma Chadwick, née Hilma Amalia Löwstädt (1855 – 1932), was a Swedish painter.

Biography

She was the granddaughter of Carl Theodor Lowstadt, a miniature painter and printmaker. She was born in Stockholm where she was trained at the art academy.[1] She travelled to Paris to finish her studies and had success at the salon there.[1] In the summer she spent time at the art colony in Grez-sur-Loing, attracted there by painters such as Carl Larsson and other swedes that she knew from Sweden. It was in Grez where she met the American painter Francis Brooks Chadwick. They married and bought an inn there and were host to many artists in the summertime. While her husband painted mostly locally, Emma enjoyed travelling and painted scenes from their travels. She knew Anders Zorn from her days at the academy and met him and his wife Emma in Cornwall.

She is known for portraits and genre works.[2] She died in Avignon.[2]
