Extreme Rules (2014) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by WWE which took place on May 4, 2014 at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. It was the sixth event in the history of the show. Eight professional wrestling matches took place at the event. In the main event, Daniel Bryan successfully defended the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Kane. Elsewhere, The Shield (Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns) managed to overcome the reunited Evolution (Triple H, Randy Orton and Batista) in a six-man tag team match. The event received 108,000 buys (excluding WWE Network views), down from the previous year's 231,000 buys.[1]

Extreme Rules features professional wrestling matches involving different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds or storylines that play out on WWE's television programs. Wrestlers portray heroes or villains as they follow a series of events that build tension, and culminate in a wrestling match or series of matches.
Fresh off his win at WrestleMania, John Cena continued to feud with Bray Wyatt of The Wyatt Family. Cena called Wyatt out for his inability to physically defend himself and his cryptic messages without Luke Harper and Erick Rowan by his side. To make Wyatt prove himself, Cena challenged him to a steel cage match, which Wyatt accepted. On the April 28, 2014 episode of Raw, Cena entered the steel cage to address Wyatt's evil message saying that it has begun to spread amongst the audience, only to be greeted by Wyatt and a children's choir singing "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" with many Wyatt Family supporters singing along. As the children surrounded the ring, the lights went out before coming back on, with the children now wearing sheep masks as Wyatt laughed maniacally with a child on his lap.[2]
On Raw the day after WrestleMania XXX, Triple H forced Daniel Bryan to defend the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against him after Bryan had won the title at WrestleMania the night before. However, Triple H's former bodyguards, The Shield, turned on him and attacked him, resulting in a no contest.[3] As a result, Triple H reformed Evolution with Batista and Randy Orton and attacked The Shield the following week on Raw. On the April 18 edition of SmackDown, Triple H announced that Evolution would take on The Shield in a six-man tag team match at Extreme Rules.[4] However, the Raw before Extreme Rules, the fourth member of Evolution, Ric Flair, came out only to give his endorsement to the Shield, acknowledging them as the future of the WWE.
On the April 7th edition of Raw, AJ Lee was bragging about having defended her title against 13 other divas at WrestleMania XXX when NXT Women's Champion Paige came out to congratulate AJ on her title defense. AJ then slapped Paige and challenged her to a match for AJ's Divas Championship. The match itself was dominated by AJ until Paige escaped AJ's submission move, the Black Widow, and hit one of her finishing moves, the Paige Turner, to win her first WWE Divas Championship. On the April 15 episode of WWE Main Event, AJ's bodyguard, Tamina Snuka, won a battle royal to become number one contender to Paige's title, allowing her to wrestle Paige for the championship at Extreme Rules.[5]
On the Raw after WrestleMania XXX, Cesaro announced that he would no longer be managed by Zeb Colter and instead be a 'Paul Heyman Guy', bringing to an end the team of The Real Americans. This started a rivalry between Heyman and Colter, and by extension between Cesaro and Jack Swagger as both men were entered into the Intercontinental Championship tournament. Prior to Cesaro's semi-final match against Rob Van Dam, Van Dam badmouthed Heyman and advised Cesaro to stay away from him. Van Dam would go on to beat Cesaro via count-out after interference from Swagger and Colter. The following week on the April 28th episode of Raw, Colter approached Van Dam and suggested that he and Swagger team up to take on a common enemy in Heyman, but Van Dam declined. Van Dam later lost the tournament final to Bad News Barrett after interference from Cesaro; Swagger then appeared, attacked Cesaro and attempted to attack Van Dam before being fought off. This set up a triple-threat match between Cesaro, Swagger and Van Dam at Extreme Rules.
On the April 14th edition of Raw, a tournament was designed to determine who would face Big E for the WWE Intercontinental Championship at the event. The bracket is as listed below:

On the April 21st episode of Raw, Bryan and Brie Bella were getting ready to celebrate their marriage when Stephanie McMahon came out and announced that Bryan would defend his WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Kane at Extreme Rules. Kane then came out from the audience (wearing his mask) and attacked Bryan, giving him three Tombstone Piledrivers - the first on the floor, the second on the steel steps, and the third on the announce table, resulting in Bryan being stretchered out of the arena. One week later, during Bella's match with Paige, Kane came up through a hole from underneath the ring and attempted to pull Bella down to hell with him before she got away.[6]
Alexander Rusev made his main roster debut on April 7 and scored victories over various superstars, including R-Truth and Xavier Woods. He also attacked both competitors after their respective matches. This set up a 2-on-1 Handicap match with Rusev against R-Truth and Woods at the pay-per-view.
Set for the pre-show is El Torito squaring off against Hornswoggle in the first ever WeeLC match which is a mini TLC match involving mini chairs, tables and ladders. On May 2 edition of SmackDown, Hornswoggle and El Torito would sign the contract for their match.
Event
The pre-show was provided by pre-show panel of Booker T, Alex Riley, Josh Mathews and Sheamus. Prior to the pay-per-view, El Torito defeated Hornswoggle in the first ever WeeLC match which was a mini TLC match involving mini chairs, tables and ladders.
Miscellaneous
The English commentators were Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler and John "Bradshaw" Layfield while there were also Spanish and German commentators ringside. Lilian Garcia and Justin Roberts were ring announcers.
Preliminary matches
The first match of the night was a Triple Threat elimination match between Cesaro, Jack Swagger and Rob Van Dam. Once the action began, Swagger, Van Dam and Cesaro all hesitated to jump into the fray. Van Dam fought off both men, monkey flipping Cesaro and evading Swagger. Van Dam later hit a nasty powerbomb on Cesaro on the outside. Swagger gained control from him, though, using his power to keep Van Dam on the defensive. That only lasted until Cesaro took him for a swing. The Cesaro and Swagger fought among themselves as Cesaro showed off his own impressive power. Van Dam sneaked in a Five-Star Frog Splash to take Swagger out of the mix. Now a one-on-one fight, Cesaro smashed Van Dam to the mat, smashed him into the security barricade and played to the crowd. The gutsy Van Dam fended him off. His exciting arsenal earned him two-counts aplenty but wasn't enough to put Cesaro away. He missed a Five-Star Frog Splash, crashing into a trash can. Cesaro ended the bout with The Neutralizer onto that same trash can.
The second match was a 2-on-1 Handicap match between Alexander Rusev and the team of R-Truth and Xavier Woods. Rusev floored both Truth and Xavier Woods before the match officially began. He hurled Woods into the side of the ring before smashing R-Truth with forearm shots. R-Truth interrupted Rusev's dominance, using speed and kicks to keep the big man off balance. Rusev showed off agility of his own in between showcases of his strength. He locked in The Accolade for the win, then attacked Woods post-match, leaving him writhing on the floor.
The next was WWE Intercontinental Championship match between Big E and Bad News Barrett. Their fight quickly traveled to the outside, where Big E rammed Barrett into the ring post. A thrust kick to the champ turned things around soon after. He hit Big E with an elbow drop, a DDT and a crossbody. The blows staggered Big E. He struggled to recover or to avoid getting knocked around. A pair of suplexes to Barrett soon earned him some momentum, though. Barrett countered with Winds of Change and Wasteland, each move only getting him near-falls. He readied his elbow to hit a decisive strike, but Big E slammed him to the mat instead. Barrett second attempt at the move came with him flying through the air. It earned him his fourth win of the WWE Intercontinental Championship.
The forth match was a Six man tag team match between The Shield and Evolution. Both team stared each other down before charging at each other, fists flying. Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose tossed out each of their enemies before the bell rang. Rollins and Triple H began the official action. Speed had Rollins on top momentarily, but a Triple H clothesline, Batista ramming his shoulder into him and Randy Orton stomping on his chest had the high-flyer dazed. Evolution tagged in and out after quick bursts of offense on Rollins. A desperate Rollins finally tagged Ambrose in. Ambrose clocked everyone in sight. Ambrose slipped on a figure-four before the match briefly unraveled thanks to Reigns going on the attack. It was then Ambrose's turn to get pummeled by Evolution. Punch drunk, he swung wildly at Triple H. Against Batista, he couldn't stay on his feet, taking a boot to the chin. A DDT allowed him to tag in Reigns, who charged up the crowd with every high-impact move. The pace quickened as The Shield pounced on Batista and hit a triple powerbomb. Orton pulled Reigns off The Animal to save the match. Orton and Triple H both hit their finishers on Reigns, but Batista couldn't turn those into a win. The fight moved into the crowd for everyone but Reigns and Batista. The foes brawled among the fans, Ambrose tumbling down a flight of stairs. Back in the ring, a Superman punch and a spear finished off Batista.
The fifth match was a Steel cage match between John Cena and Bray Wyatt. A cluster of blue lights glowed in the crowd as Bray Wyatt entered. Cena awaited him in the cage—focused, pacing, concerned. Cena tried to begin the action with mat wrestling. Wyatt overruled him, turning the bout into a street fight. Early on, Cena looked to climb the cage, but Erick Rowan and Luke Harper waited for him on the ground like two gators. Wyatt then dominated, conducting the crowd to sing in between attacks on Cena. Wyatt held him up against the steel cage and commanded Rowan to crash into him. Cena stopped Wyatt's attempt escape and followed with one of his own. Wyatt controlled the match for the most part. He snuffed out several of Cena's rallies with brute force. He grinned as he smashed him with heavy blows. When Cena did manage to knock Wyatt to the mat, Rowan stood at the cage door, holding it closed. Rowan and Harper smashed the door on Cena. Cena later got over the top of the cage, only to have Rowan push him back over. On another attempted exit, Harper met him, trying to punch him down. That fight brought Harper into the cage, allowing him to stop an STF by Cena and a pin attempt after a top-rope Attitude Adjustment. Cena took on the entire clan, knocking them all down. He then looked ready to win the match, only a few steps from escaping the cage. A child appeared and began to sing in a demonic voice, frightening Cena enough for Wyatt to take advantage, hitting Sister Abigail and walk out of the cage, thus winning the match.
The next match was a WWE Divas Championship match between Paige and Tamina Snuka. After the match started, Paige looked to outrun and outmove Tamina Snuka early on. Tamina caught her when she went to the top rope, though. The challenger rammed her into the ring apron and flung her into the turnbuckles. The punishment continued, Tamina roaring before every power move. Paige tried to hit a hurricanrana on the outside, but Tamina instead smashed her into the security barricade. The champ managed a brief comeback, but soon found herself taking a flight to the mat courtesy of Tamina. Paige caught a superkick attempt and turned it into the modified Scorpion Crosslock for the win.
Main event match
The final match was an Extreme Rules match between Daniel Bryan and Kane for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Bryan charged at Kane early, and the two brawled on the entrance ramp. Kane went to the weapons, striking Bryan's spine with a kendo stick. Bryan fought back with a running dropkick, but Kane garnered the upper hand. He dropped Bryan on the barricade and wedged a steel chair into the corner. Bryan managed to use that weapon himself, tripping Kane right into it. Bryan tore apart both announce tables, smacking Kane with pieces of them. Kane tried to chokeslam him through the table but suffered a tornado DDT instead. The two moved their fight to the backstage area and the parking lot, Kane cracking Bryan's body against everything solid. Bryan fought back with a snow shovel. He ran toward Kane, who sent him crashing onto the hood of a car. Kane broke car windows as he threw objects and fists Bryan's way, who avoided them, striking back with a tire iron. Bryan lifted Kane onto a forklift and drove back toward the ring. He raised it and dropped Kane into the center of the ring. From the top of the forklift, Bryan leaped at Kane with a diving headbutt, but only got a two-count. Kane turned a flying knee into a chokeslam, but Bryan kicked out. A DDT onto a chair followed by a barrage of chair shots and the Yes! lock with a kendo stick didn't do Kane in, who had enough strength left to chokeslam Bryan through a table. Kane then set another table on fire, but Bryan sent Kane through the table instead, hitting a Running Knee and winning the match, thus retaining the championship.
Aftermath
At the start of Raw after Extreme Rules, Dean Ambrose was forced to defend his United States Championship in a 20-man Battle royal. Ambrose made it to the end with Sheamus, but a well timed Brogue Kick knocked Ambrose out and allowed Sheamus to throw Ambrose out of the ring to win his second United States Championship, ending Ambrose's reign at 351 days. The Shield then fought The Wyatt Family later in the night; just as things turned in The Shield's favor, Evolution came out and distracted The Shield, allowing Bray Wyatt to hit Roman Reigns with Sister Abigail for the win. Evolution then assaulted The Shield, and humiliated them by hitting Reigns with The Shield's signature triple power bomb. This led to The Shield challenging Evolution to a rematch at Payback, which they accepted. The match was made a No Holds Barred Elimination match.
Cena's feud with Wyatt continued with a Last Man Standing match being set up for Payback. At the pay-per-view, Cena buried Wyatt under multiple equipment cases to win the match and end their feud.[7]
On the May 12 episode of Raw, Daniel Bryan announced that he would undergo neck surgery, and would be absent from WWE for an unspecified amount of time. That same night, Stephanie McMahon called Bryan to the ring, before Kane dragged him out into the entrance before being loaded onto a stretcher by medical personnel.[8] On May 15, Bryan underwent successful neck surgery, with a cervical foraminotomy to decompress the nerve root having been performed.[9] On the May 19 edition of Raw, Stephanie McMahon gave Bryan an ultimatum to surrender the WWE World Heavyweight Championship the following week on Raw. Bryan replied next week on Raw that he wouldn't surrender it. McMahon then retaliated saying that she would give until Payback to surrender the title. If he didn't surrender, his wife Brie Bella will be fired. At Payback, Brie would let Bryan keep the championship by quitting WWE, and finalized it by slapping McMahon across the face.
