Germany participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The German entry was selected through the national final Unser Song für Dänemark, organised by the German broadcaster Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR). Elaiza represented Germany with the song "Is It Right". In the final, Germany placed 18th, scoring 39 points.

Unser Song für Dänemark ("Our Song for Denmark") was the competition that selected Germany's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2014. The German national final took place at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne on 13 March 2014.[1] Like in the previous four years, the national final was co-produced by the production company Brainpool, which also co-produced the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest in Düsseldorf and the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest in Baku.[1] Eight artists participated in the competition with two songs each; seven of the participants were established artists, while the eighth participant was selected from a club concert wildcard round for young talents.[2][3] Both the club concert wildcard round and the national final were hosted by Barbara Schöneberger with Janin Reinhardt reporting from the green room during both shows.[4][5]

Club concert – wildcard round

German singer Adel Tawil headed the campaign to find young talents that are interested in representing Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest 2014.[6] A submission period was open from 25 November 2013 until 22 January 2014 during which artists were required to upload a video with a performance of an original song or a cover version on YouTube and submit an online application.[2] 2,240 artists had applied at the close of the submission deadline from which ten finalists were selected by a special jury.[7] On 10 February 2014, NDR announced the ten acts for the wildcard round.[8] On 27 February 2014, the selected artists competed during a live broadcast from Edelfettwerk in Hamburg where televoting selected the group Elaiza to receive a wildcard to compete in the German national final.[2][9]

The national final featured the eight competing artists performing their songs with the selection of the winning entry occurring over three rounds of public televoting: the first round reduced eight artists to four, the second round reduced four artists to two and the third round resulted in the selection of the winning artist and song. In addition to the performances from the competing artists, the show featured guest performances by Eurovision Song Contest 2013 winner Emmelie de Forest performing the 2013 winning entry "Only Teardrops" as well as the theme song for the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest "Rainmaker", German singer Adel Tawil performing his single "Weinen" and 2014 Italian Eurovision entrant Emma Marrone performing the Italian 2014 contest entry "La mia città".[10][11] At the conclusion of the show, Elaiza was selected as the winner with the song "Is It Right".[12]

Round 1

In the first round, each artist performed one of the two songs they have selected to perform first. The top four artists were selected by televoting to proceed to the second round.

Round 2

In the second round, the four artists that have qualified from the first round performed their second song. Out of all 8 songs of the remaining artists (both from round 1 and 2) the top two songs were selected by televoting. These 2 songs had to be from different artists. If the top 2 songs were both from the same artist only the first would advance together with the third placed song.

As a member of the "Big Five", Germany automatically qualified for a place in the final, held on 10 May 2014. The European Broadcasting Union approved a request from the German broadcaster for Germany to vote in the second semi-final on 8 May 2014.[14] During the German delegation's press conference on 6 May 2014, Germany was allocated to compete in the first half of the final.[15] In the final, the producers of the show decided that Germany would perform 12th, following Austria and preceding Sweden.[16] Germany placed 18th in the final, scoring 39 points.

On stage, the members of Elaiza performed alone with band members Yvonne Grünwald playing the accordion, Natalie Plöger playing the contrabass and Ela Steinmetz performing lead vocal. The German performance featured paper streamers that fall over the stage during the first and last chorus.[17]

In Germany, both the semi-finals and the final were broadcast live on EinsPlus and on delay on EinsFestival. The semi-finals were also broadcast live on Phoenix, while the final was broadcast live on Das Erste. All shows were commentated by Peter Urban.[18] The German spokesperson revealing the result of the German vote in the final was Helene Fischer.[19]
