IOP Publishing (previously named Institute of Physics Publishing) is the publishing company of the Institute of Physics. It provides publications through which scientific research is distributed worldwide, including journals, community websites, magazines, conference proceedings and books. The Institute of Physics is a scientific charity devoted to increasing the practice, understanding and application of physics. Any financial surplus earned by IOP Publishing goes to support physics through the activities of the Institute.

The main IOP Publishing headquarters is located in Bristol, England, and the North American headquarters is located in Philadelphia, United States. It also has several regional offices including Washington, D.C.; Mexico City; Beijing; Tokyo; Moscow; St. Petersburg; and Sydney. It employs over 300 staff.

It was the first physics publisher to publish a journal on the internet. In 1994, the journal Classical and Quantum Gravity was published as a TeX file. In January 1996, the organisation launched the full electronic journals programme on the World Wide Web, ahead of other physics publishers.[1]

Magazines

  • CERN Courier covers current developments in high-energy physics and related fields worldwide. It is published 10 times a year and reaches more than 72,000 readers in every major particle-physics research center in the world.
  • ESRFnews is published twice yearly and distributed for free to synchrotron radiation sites in more than 50 countries. The magazine reflects ongoing scientific and technical developments at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility.
  • Physics World is the membership magazine of the Institute of Physics. Published monthly, it covers all areas of physics, both pure and applied, and is relevant to physicists in research, industry and education worldwide. The magazine is free to members of the Institute of Physics, although selected articles can be read by anyone for free online at physicsworld.com. It is also available via an annual subscription. Physics World won "Best magazine - Professional Association or Royal College" at the MemCom Awards 2012. It also won "Best specialist site for journalism" at the Online Media Awards and "Best marketing and editorial collaboration" at the Specialized Information Publishers Association (SIPA) awards in 2011.
