KALA (88.5 FM) is a 10,000 watt public format, non-profit radio station in Davenport, Iowa, one of the Quad Cities. The station licensee, St. Ambrose University is authorized by the Federal Communications Commission. KALA also has a translator, K288CY Bettendorf, Iowa at 105.5 FM and KALA-HD2 at 106.1 FM.[1]
KALA's format includes news, information and entertainment from National Public Radio and from Public Radio International, including "The Tavis Smiley Show", and "The Takeaway" The station's Jazz and Variety musical lineup includes several styles of music. Catering to specialty/niche audiences, this lineup includes: Mainstream and Fusion Jazz, Blues and Roots music. Music Programming includes the "Voyage" Jazz program with host Jason Stewart, broadcasting on KALA since 1978; "Jazz in the Box with James Michael Olson," a variety music sampler show; and "Chill Out," a Fusion jazz and urban program from host and station Operations Manager David Baker. These and several other air personalities, have been on the station more than 10 years. A lesser known but much touted and beloved on air personality was the "Renegade" Hosting a late night rock and blues show entitled "Blues Tonight with the Renegade!" Provided various blues artists as well as Rock artists. LNWTR frequently played entire albums which gave late night listeners a much needed break from some of the more "Ethnic" and Religious Artists.
The station also plays "New World" eclectic international pop music, "Chill Music" or "Quiet Storm" urban contemporary, and Classic R and B. Several shows also feature an upbeat jazz format; the station also plays hot urban contemporary, college rock, Hispanic, Latin jazz, and African-American gospel under the "Gospel Train" banner.
During the week, KALA features public service programming (both syndicated and locally produced); there are also local, state, and national news. Occasionally the station will feature live music features, and St. Ambrose University campus news. A mainstay of the station's commitment to the University community, is its live home/remote coverage of St. Ambrose University sports events. This includes SAU's Fighting Bees/Queen Bees basketball, football, and baseball.
