Kalpana Patowary (Assamese: কল্পনা পাটোৱাৰী) is an Indian folk singer from Assam. She is a disciple of Ustad Gulam Mustafa Khan and has been influenced by Bhupen Hazarika. She participated in the reality show Junoon - Kuchh Kar Dikhaane Ka (2008) on NDTV Imagine. Kalpana Patowary has lent her vocals to numerous Bhojpuri songs and Bollywood numbers in films like Billu and R. Rajkumar and Assamese films like Ahetuk. Although she has many folk and popular songs to her credit, Bhojpuri music has been her most dedicated foray.[1]

Early life and background

Kalpana Patowary was born on 27 October 1978 in Barpeta district in Assam.

A graduate in English literature from Cotton College, Assam and Visharad in Indian Classical Music (vocal) under Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapeeth, Lucknow in 1996, a regular artist Doordarshan Kendra, Guwahati, Assam as well as All India Radio (yuba bani) Guwahati, Assam since 1992.Trained in Assamese folk music by her father Sri Bipin Patowary, an accomplished folk singer himself, Kalpana Patowary also trained as Sangeet Visharad in Indian classical music at Bhatkhande Music Institute, Lucknow. Kalpana Patowary has a stunning five-octave range and signature vocal abilities, and has been hailed as a prodigy in the world of Bhojpuri music. She has mastered and presented in a new way many forms of Bhojpuri music such as Urvi, Pachra, Kajri, Sohar, Vivaah geet, Chaita, and Nautanki. She has been credited with reviving and promoting Bhojpuri music on the international stage.[2]

Kalpana Patowary has worked extensively on the works of Bhikhari Thakur and has released an album commemorating his life and work.[3]

Career

Her contribution to the Bhojpuri music, as well as her instrumental role bringing forth the girls and women from the remote villages out to chase their dreams. She has served as a role model for active involvement for both the Bhojpuri traditional folk forms and Bhojpuri film music. She has transformed the Bhojpuri singing art from a small regional industry to the full fledged high quality vocal art in the International front. Her invaluable work in MTV Coke Studio 2014 and 2015 repeatedly proves this. She is the first Bhojpuri singer to present an age old tradition of Khadi Birha tradition to the International platforms with world renowned musicians. Her decade long service to Bhojpuri music has served multiple terms, though she was born far away from the Bhojpurian North Indian society. Although, she is Assamese, yet Kalpana Patowary has been very active in Bhojpuri music, who has tirelessly served for both Uttar Pradesh – Bihar and Assam. Her proactive approach has helped the Bhojpuri music grow in both scope and recognition.

In 2013, she made an appearance in a documentary film; Bidesia in Bambai, a feature-length film released in December 8, 2013 is as much a story about Bhojpuri music as it is about a constantly churning city. At times the music is the hero, at times the city. It is a look at Mumbai through the lens of the migrant worker and his music.” These successes led to invitations to perform on a 15 days tour for concerts in four Latin American countries presented by The Ministry of Cultural Affairs on the auspicious occasion of Indian Arrival Day, commemorating the arrival of Girmitias from the Indian subcontinent to Caribbean and the island nation of Mauritius presenting songs on migration.

CHHAPRAHIYA PURVI

Kalpana is the first woman to record and sing the Chhaprahiya Purvi style with her commendable high pitch vocal. “The day I decided that I was going to sing this Purvi folk form, being a woman I was challenged by my inner being. No woman had ever dared to sing this particular Chhaprahiya style of Purvi folk music as it demands a high octave range.” Without compromising on the conventional and traditional value of Chhaprahiya Purvi, she has continued to add interesting innovations. Kalpana interprets the Chhaprahiya Purvi as per her own perception within the traditional framework. Until she set her foot on the scene, Purvi was a male preserve. But today she commands the art form as if she were the one to engender it. Not only she has given a new vigor to Purvi, she has also enriched it with a word of fresh interpretation. In 2004, for the first time in Bhojpuri recording musical history, Devra Tudi Killi from album Pyar Ke Rog Bhayil released from T Series was an experimentation to record it in a Female voice as it needs High octave vocal range to render. Years later the song becomes a history itself.

BHOJPURI CINEMA

Today Kalpana Patowary is the most sought after singer of Bhojpuri Cinema and is the best-selling female artist - Kalpana Patowary has made an indelible impact on the Bhojpuri music industry and audiences everywhere.

But years back the story was not the same. Whereas the first Bhojpuri film produced by Vishwanath Sahabadi in 1961, Ganga Maiya Tohe Piyari Charaihobo, post 1961, only five films were released in next 10 years. In 1978 Bhojpuri cinema got an impetus with Ashok Jain making Dangal. Dangal phenomenon gave way to a reasonable number of successful films from 1980-1990, that included Bitia Bhail Sayan , Bhaiya Dooj, Bairi sawan, Bansuriya Baje, Chandwa ke take Chakor, Dharati Maiyya , Dulha Ganga par ke, Ganga Kinare Mora Gao, Ganga Ghat, Ganga Ke Tir, Ganga Mare Laheria, Hamar Bhauji, Piya Nirmohiya, Saiyya Tere Karan, Sonwa ke Pinjra and Senur. Not too many you can count them on your fingers, and that was supposed to be golden era of Bhojpuri cinema!!!1990-2000 is supposed to be the darkest period in Bhojpuri cinema as there wasn’t a single movie released during this period.

The next big thing was “ Sasura Bara Paisewala”. Made on a budget of 30 lakhs this film went on to make 25 crore Music of this film really turned to be a milestone and here comes Kalpana Patowary’s golden voice to fulfill a long cherished dream of forming a platform to sustain the dying Bhojpuri film industry. Years later she is being compared to the golden voice of Indian cinema Lata Mangeshkar. Yes, Kalpana Patowary is respected as The Lata Mangeshkar of Bhojpuri Cinema. Hereafter, there was no looking back and today Bhojpuri film industry is the fifth largest film industry in India. From that time till now Bhojpuri film industry has evolved so much that now it has become a global industry. She has sung in more than 200 Bhojpuri films near about 10000 songs on her part as playback vocal. Other than that she sings in 28 other languages and 7000 other songs on her credit.

" Music barons in India were left gaping when Kalpana Patowary, a singer of Indian folk music, was signed on by British recording company Virgin EMI Records in April. They were all the more surprised to see the soaring international demand for her Bhojpuri music album with songs about migration. It seems Bhojpuri folk songs on migration are witnessing resurgence on an unexpected scale."
