Kyriakos Mitsotakis (Greek: Κυριάκος Μητσοτάκης; born 4 March 1968) is a Greek politician and the president of the New Democracy party. He has been a Member of the Hellenic Parliament (MP) for Athens B since 2004, and served from 2013 to 2015 as the Minister of Administrative Reform and e-Governance in the Cabinet of Antonis Samaras. On January 10, 2016, he won the second round of the New Democracy leadership election, after being 2nd behind Vangelis Meimarakis in the first round, held on 20 December 2015.

Early life and education

Born in Athens, he is the son of the former Prime Minister of Greece and honorary president of the New Democracy political party, Konstantinos Mitsotakis, and Marika Mitsotakis. Kyriakos has three children, Sofia, Konstantinos and Dafni. In addition to Greek, he speaks English, French and German.

He left Greece in 1968 for Paris, when he was six months old, along with his family, because his father was a persona non grata of the Greek military junta. He returned when democracy was restored in 1974. In 1986, he was attending the Athens College, where, almost at the end of the year, he became president of his class.

From 1986 to 1990, he studied Social Studies at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the U.S. where he graduated summa com laude. He was also honoured with the Hoopes prize.

Professional career

He worked as an economic analyst at Chase Manhattan Bank from 1990 to 1991 in London. He later returned to Greece and went to the Hellenic Air Force to do his military duty. His six-month tour before returning to Athens was at the 111th Combat Wing at Nea Anchialos.

Kyriakos returned to the USA where he continued his studies at Stanford University from which received a Masters in the International Economic Plan. He continued the circle of studies and returned to Harvard where he was awarded with an MBA.

From 1995 to 1997, he went to London and went to the consultancy McKinsey & Company. He later returned to Greece where he worked at Alpha Ventures, a private equity subsidiary of Alpha Bank. He continued with the National Bank of Greece group, as Managing Director of NBG Venture Capital. From January 2000 to April 2003, he worked in the International Council at the National Enterprise Council.

The National Enterprise Council was one of the most powerful financial enterprises in both the Greek and the Balkan markets in venture capital. The National Enterprise Council had the first company which specialized functions in the chapter of the enterprise council which works with Greek companies with the high standard of technology and was the first company to explore work in the Turkish market.

Political career

Before the 2000 elections, he worked in pre-elective organization teams of the New Democracy.

In the 2004 elections, he ran as an MP with New Democracy at Athens B constituency (which comprises all of Athens suburbs) receiving more votes than any other New Democracy candidate in the country and was elected to the parliament.

He is the president of the Friendship team with the Finnish Parliament and member of the friendship team with Egypt and Hungary.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis is honorary president of Konstantinos K. Mitsotakis Foundation, aiming at promoting the life and works of Konstantinos Mitsotakis and at reporting the modern political history of Greece.

In June 24, 2013, Kyriakos Mitsotakis was appointed as the Minister of Administrative Reform and e-Governance of Greece at the government of Antonis Samaras, succeeding Antonis Manitakis.

On January 10, 2016, Kyriakos Mitsotakis was elected president of the New Democracy political party succeeding Ioannis Plakiotakis (transitional president) with almost 4% difference from opponent Vangelis Meimarakis.

Siemens scandal

In 2007 it was reported that Kyriakos Mitsotakis was involved in the Siemens Greek bribery scandal.[1] However, Mitsotakis stated that he had no involvement in the scandal and was never proven guilty.[2]
