The La Grange Rock Shelter is an archaeological site near Leighton in Colbert County, Alabama. The rock shelter is located near the original campus of La Grange College, today located in Florence and known as the University of North Alabama. It extends 70 feet long by 15 feet deep (21 by 4.5 m) beneath an outcrop of sandstone. An excavation of the site in 1972 revealed charcoal samples that were radiocarbon dated to ~11,280 years old, placing estimates of the site's habitation in the Paleo-Indian Period. At the time of the discovery, only one other site east of the Mississippi River had been dated to that age.[2] The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.[1]
