Laguna College of Art and Design, or LCAD, is a small private college located in Laguna Beach, California. With an enrollment of approximately 450 students, LCAD focuses on a fine arts program. The college offers Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in 5 majors: Painting and Drawing, Illustration, Animation, Design + Digital Media, and Game Art. A minor is available in Sculpture and Action Sports Design. The college also offers two Master of Fine Arts degrees, in Painting and in Drawing; and a one-year post-baccalaureate program in drawing and painting. Nike executives have named LCAD as having "1 of 4 best design schools in the world." As well as the only college in the world to have an Action Sports Degree, the brain child of Hurley and LCAD design directors. LCAD is considered one of the country’s best for graphic arts and, specifically game art, with a success rate of graduating students quickly being hired at top gaming companies including Walt Disney Animation, Microsoft, EA, and Activision. Students can choose a focus on physical or electronic mediums.[1] LCAD was recently recognized by LG Electronics as one of the nation’s top nine colleges for art and design and allowed students to submit art work for LG "Art of The Pixel" contest.[2]

LCAD has an affiliate arrangement with the Florence Academy of Art for summer study in Florence, Italy for class credit. Similar arrangements for Painting and Drawing majors exist with the Art Students League, and for Game Art majors with the Academy for Digital Entertainment at NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences. In Graphic Design, an association was created in 2011 with the Communication University of China, Beijing.

Facilities

The main campus is situated in Laguna Canyon, on 4 acres (16,000 m2) near the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. The school also contains a South Campus and graduate campus. In 2010, it opened what is called the Big Bend Campus housing Animation, Game Art, and Design + Digital Media majors. LCAD maintains the Dennis and Leslie Power Library with access to a multi-media collection including 16,000 volumes, 1,300 videotapes and DVDs,and many arts-oriented online databases.[3][4][5]

The college is accredited by both the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD)[6] and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).[7]
