Events which occurred in remote areas will be excluded from the list as they wouldn't have generated significant media interest. All dates are listed according to UTC time.

January–March
- A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Balkh Province, Afghanistan on January 1 at a depth of 35.0 km.[1]
- A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Almaty Province, Kazakhstan on January 3 at a depth of 20.0 km.[2] Four-hundred and fifty people were killed and major damage was caused in the area.[3]
- A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck Hebei Province, China on January 26 at an unknown depth. At least one death and one injury was reported. Many homes were destroyed at Yuxian.[4]
- A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, Tajikistan on February 18 at a depth of 15.0 km.[5] Ninety people were killed and many homes were destroyed or damaged. A landslide appears to have contributed to the destruction and death toll.[6]
- A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck beneath Lake Ohrid, Republic of Macedonia on February 18 at an unknown depth.[7]
- A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the Ryukyu Islands, Japan on February 23 at a depth of 5.0 km.[8]
- A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck to the southeast of Mindanao, Philippines on March 6 at a depth of 100.0 km.[9]
