The Makwana Muslims are Muslim converts from the Makwana Rajput community. According to their traditions, their ancestor Babuji, the son of Harpal Makwana, converted to Islam. He founded to the principality of Lalpur-Mandva, in Mahikantha. The Makwana are now mainly small peasant proprietors found in north Gujarat. They are Sunni Muslims and speak Gujarati. The Makwana intermarry with other Muslim Rajput groups in the neighbourhood, such as the Molesalam, Nayak and Parmar.[1] In Gujarat, Kolis also are Makwana.[2]
