Development
The SKYe SH09 was first proposed in 2007. A scale model was displayed at Heli-Expo 2011.[3]
It achieved first flight in October 2014.[4][5][6] Marenco stopped flight tests after 100 flight hours in summer 2015 to develop the second prototype, which incorporates a modified bearing-free rotor head and new blades to reduce vibrations.[7][8] A third prototype, which will be close to the production version will be completed in 2016. Type certification is likely to occur in 2017. Marenco had 70 Letters of intent in autumn 2015 and 90 in spring 2016, half of them from North America.[9] They expect to produce 40-100 aircraft per year,[10] and are considering a twin-engine version of the design.[11] Development has been delayed because Marenco had to design not only the helicopter itself, but also the supporting tools such as test equipment.[10][12]
Design
The SH09 is a single engine, composite helicopter with sliding side doors and a rear clamshell. The tail rotor is shrouded and the main rotor uses a five-bladed bearingless hub. The fuselage includes additional floor mounted windows between the pilots seats for vertical visibility.[13] Some of the materials used are from TenCate for Out of autoclave composite manufacturing[14] and Gurit.[15] The glass cockpit is a Sagem ICDS-8A.[16]
