Margaret Smith (born 18 February 1961) is a Scottish Liberal Democrat politician, and former MSP for Edinburgh West, a seat she held from the 1999 election until the 2011 election. She was the Scottish Liberal Democrats' Education Spokesperson.
At the 2011 Scottish Parliament elections, she lost her seat to the SNP's Colin Keir who won with a majority of 2689.[1] As the Liberal Democrats failed to win any list seats on the Lothian Region list, Smith was not returned as an MSP.
She was the first openly lesbian MSP.[2]
