Mary Fee (born 23 March 1954) is a Scottish Labour Party Member of the Scottish Parliament, representing the West of Scotland region.[1] Having previously served on the Health and Sport Committee, she was appointed Convener of the Equal Opportunities Committee on 10 January 2012.
Early life and career
Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found. Fee was born in Edinburgh on March 23, 1954. She was educated first at Leith Walk Primary and later at Broughton Secondary, both in Edinburgh.
After leaving education, she entered employment with the Bank of Scotland where she stayed for two years (1972-1974). She then moved on to work with British Telecom, staying with them for over ten years (1974-1984). Having married in 1977, Fee transferred within British Telecom to their Glasgow offices.
She continued working there until the birth of her first son.
In 1990, Fee began working for Tesco in their Renfrew store. She became involved in the trade union, Usdaw, of which she is still a member, and became a shop steward in 1990. Mary was elected onto the Usdaw Executive in 2000 and later became a member of the STUC General Council. Fee served as a member of the Employment Tribunals during this time as resigned from the Tribunals as of February 2011.
Political career
Fee was elected to Renfrewshire Council in the 2007 Scottish Local elections having been elected on first preference votes in the first round to the Renfrew South and Gallowhill Ward of Renfrewshire council.
In 2011, Fee topped the West Scotland Labour list as a candidate under the Additional Member System used by the Scottish Parliament. Fee was elected on May 5, 2011 to the Scottish Parliament.
She stepped down as a councillor at the 2012 Scottish Local elections.
Fee is currently the Convenor of the Equal Opportunities Committee in the Scottish Parliament and a substitute member for the Finance Committee. She has interest in equality, justice and health issues and has established the Cross-Party Group on Families Affected by Imprisonment[2] of which she is the Convenor.
Fee is also a member of other Cross-Party Groups including Cancer, Epilepsy, Human Trafficking, Mental Health, Middle East and South Asia, Scotch Whisky, Scottish Showmens Guild, Taiwan and Towns and Town Centres.
In October 2012, Fee and other Members of the Cross-Party Group on Taiwan visited the Republic of China (Taiwan) at the invitation of the Director General, Taipei Representative Office in the UK. They held meetings with a number of government departments, schools, trade and cultural organisations within Taiwan.
