Records and career milestones
In January 2008, Djokovic won his first grand slam singles title by defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final of the Australian Open in four sets. By winning the Australian Open, Djokovic became the first Serbian player to win a grand slam singles title[4] and the youngest player in the Open Era to have reached the semi-finals or better at all four Grand Slam events.[5]
Djokovic began the 2011 season by compiling a 43–match winning streak, which included tournament victories at the Australian Open,[6] BNP Paribas Open[7] and Sony Ericsson Open.[8] During the clay court season, Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal in the finals of the Mutua Madrid Open[9] and Internazionali BNL d'Italia[10] and thus secured his first victories over Nadal on clay, before suffering his first loss of the year in the semi-finals of the 2011 French Open, where he fell to Roger Federer in four sets.[11] At the Wimbledon Championships, Djokovic defeated twelfth seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semi-finals, recovering from a break down in the first set to reach his first Wimbledon final and thus ensured that he would become the World No. 1 for the first time in his career.[12] Djokovic went on to defeat Nadal for the fifth consecutive time this season to win his first Wimbledon title and his third grand slam singles title overall.[13] In August 2011, Djokovic broke the record for most ATP Masters 1000 titles in one season by winning his fifth masters title of the year at the Rogers Cup.[14] At the US Open, Djokovic defeated Federer for the second successive year by rallying from two sets to love down and saving two match points at 5–3 down in the final set to win in five sets and thus reach his third US Open final.[15] In the final, Djokovic defeated Nadal in four sets to win his first US Open title and fourth grand slam singles title overall.[16]
In January 2012, Djokovic won his third Australian Open title by defeating Nadal in the longest match in Australian Open history[17] and longest final in Open Era Grand Slam history[18] In June, Djokovic reached his first French Open final and fourth consecutive grand slam singles final but lost in four sets to Nadal.[19] With this achievement, Djokovic has now reached the finals of all four grand slam events.[20] In October, Djokovic defeated Tomáš Berdych in straight sets to reach the final of the Shanghai Rolex Masters. With this achievement, Djokovic has now reached the finals of all nine ATP Masters 1000 events.[20]
In January 2013, Djokovic defeated World No. 3 Andy Murray in the final of the Australian Open to win his fourth Australian Open title and his sixth grand slam singles title overall.[21] As a result, Djokovic also broke the open era record for most consecutive Australian Open titles with three.[22] In April, Djokovic ended Rafael Nadal's 46 match winning streak at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters by defeating the Spaniard in the final in straight sets.[23] With this achievement, Djokovic has now won all three ATP Masters 1000 events on clay and eight of the nine ATP Masters 1000 events overall.
At the 2014 Shanghai Rolex Masters, Djokovic extended his winning streak in China to twenty-eight matches with a straight sets win over David Ferrer,[24] before losing to eventual champion, Roger Federer in the semi-finals.[25]
In January 2015, Djokovic became the second man (after Roy Emerson) and the first in the open era to win five Australian Open titles when he defeated Murray in four sets in the final.[26] In March, he successfully defended his titles in Indian Wells and Miami, thus becoming the first player in history to accomplish the Indian Wells-Miami double on three separate occasions.[27] In April, he tied Roger Federer for the second most ATP Masters 1000 titles won with twenty-three after defeating Tomáš Berdych in the final of the Monte-Carlo Masters, and thus also became the first man to win the first three masters tournaments of the season.[28] He ended 2015 with six Masters titles, a new season record.[29]
