Romaero
Romaero, formerly Intreprinderea de Reparatii Material Aeronautic or IRMA (Enterprise for the Repair of Aeronautical Material) is a Romanian aircraft repair facility with some production capability for outside designs. Headquartered in Bucharest, it was founded by Royal Decree in 1920 as ASAM, and rebranded as IRMA after 1944. In 1978, the company changed its name to IAvB - Întreprinderea de Avioane București (Bucharest Enterprise Aircraft), rebranded as Romaero S.A., in 1991.[1][2]
Ownership Structure
The company is majority state-owned with 51.9% of shares held by the Romanian Ministry of Economy, 21% of the state property fund has kot. 25.85% of total shares of the fund Muntenia, while 1.25% of shares owned by other small investors.
Products
Since 1946, Romaero as IRMA, overhauled the following the Soviet aircraft: Li-2, IL-14, IL-18, An-2, An-24, An-26 and An-30. Romaero also produced the following Romanian-developed multi-purpose light aircraft and agricultural aircraft: IAR-818, IAR-821, and IAR-822.
In 1968, the company started building the British Britten-Norman Islander light multipurpose aircraft. IRMA has produced over 500 Islander aircraft.[3]
In the early 1980s, another British type, the BAC One-Eleven (BAC 1-11) started manufacturing under license. The contract for the acquisition of license agreements was signed in 1979, and in 1982 the first ROMBAC 1-11 type aircraft was completed; until 1989 there were built up to a total of 10 units.
In 1994, Boeing contracted Romaero to manufacture Boeing 737 and Boeing 757 aircraft parts. Romaero also participates in other Western European aircraft manufacturing programs.
In 2003, Romaero became the American Lockheed Martin aircraft factory service center for C-130 Hercules aircraft repairs.
