Samarendra Maulik

Samarendra Nath Maulik (1881, Tamluk - 1950, Chelsea) was an Indian entomologist .

Maulik was a specialist in Coleoptera, and worked at the British Museum (Natural History) where he studied leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae; he had also held the position of Professor of Zoology at the University of Calcutta.

He wrote three volumes in The Fauna of British India, Including Ceylon and Burma series.

  • (1919) Chrysomelidae: Hispinae and Cassidinae xi + 439 p 130 figs.
  • (1926) Chrysomelidae: Chrysomelinae and Halticinae 442 p 139 figs 1 map.
  • (1936) Chrysomelidae: Galerucinae 648 p 144 fig 1 map 1 plate.

According to his obituary,[1] Dr. Maulik attempted to adopt a scientific attitude in his approach to all problems. His views were liberal, and he was an atheist.
