Sanjeet Kumar, better known by his fight name Sangram Singh, is an Indian wrestler and actor.[1][2] He has also appeared in a number of reality television shows, such as Survivor India and was finalist of season seven of Bigg Boss in 2013. In July 2015, he won Commonwealth Heavyweight Professional Championship that was held in South Africa.[4][5]

Career

Sangram Singh started his career as a sportsperson with Delhi Police in 1999. He was born as premature child, at an early age he got rheumatoid arthritis and was in a wheel chair for 8 years. His willpower to make him great wrestler and his career in wrestling took him around the world. He left Delhi Police due to him not getting timely permission for a wrestling trip to Italy in 2007.[6] He was awarded the World's Best Professional Wrestler title by World Wrestling Professionals, South Africa in 2012 for his style, stamina and nature of wrestling.[7] He was named brand ambassador for the Wrestling Federation of India for 2014.[8] Sangram Singh shared his fitness mantra with Actress Raveena Tandon on her television chat show Simply Baatein inspiring all to be healthy and fit.[9] He is also closely working with Maneka Gandhi for Sanjay Gandhi Animal Care Centre and People For Animal (PFA) as their Brand Amabassador.[10][11][12][13] He was the official motivational speaker for the Indian Army and for Indian wrestlers who were representing India in the Commonwealth Games.[14][15] Sangram has also been part of promotion to create awareness about voting in Haryana, his hometown.[16] Sangram had a Wrestling match against Canadian Wrestler Joe E. Legend in South Africa on 18 July 2015. Apparently Sangram won the Commonwealth Heavyweight Championship after defeating Joe E. Legend in the Professional wrestling match Last Man Standing fight in Port Elizabeth.[17] Though the contract of Nach Baliye 7 expired on 5 July 2015, Sangram tried his best to accommodate the Grand Finale of the show in his schedule but the wrestling match was his prior commitment. Also there were rumours that Sangram was upset with the makers of Nach Baliye 7 as they were partial towards certain contestants and were letting them travel abroad during the shooting of the reality show.[18] Sangram Singh was felicitated for his Commonwealth Heavyweight Professional Championship victory by the honorable Prime Minister Of India Shri Narendra Modi in Delhi for making India Proud.[19] Hrithik Roshan and Discovery India came up with a television show HRX Heroes where stories of Real Life heroes were depicted. One such story was of Sangram Singh whose journey from wheelchair to being an International Professional Wrestler was shown. Its amazing how inspiring is the journey and we hope it inspires more youngsters by watching this show.[20] Sangram Singh announced the launch of Champions Pro Khusti league in Dec 2015 in Mumbai. Sangram ji will play his first International match here in Chandigarh on Feb 6th 2016. This match will be a charity match for the benefit of Cancer patients.[21] Sangram received the title "Indian Affairs Indian of the year 2014 in Sports Leadership" at 5th Annual Indian Affairs founded by Satya Brahma at India Leadership Conclave & Indian Affairs Business Leadership Awards 2014.[22] Sangram Singh motivated the students of IIT Delhi in February 2016 when he was invited to the institution as a Guest Of Honor. The connection that Sangram Singh has with the youth of India is amazing.[23] Sangram won the Commonwealth Heavyweight Championships for the second time on March 27, 2016 by defeating South African Wrestler Ananzi thus keeping the Belt In India. The match was played at Port Elizabeth, South Africa.[24] Recently, being inspired by Sangram's life journey so far a chapter on him has been included in Hindi textbooks for children studying in 7th standard. When asked Sangramji about it he said he was very humbled by it.[25] Also a scholarship under Sangram Singh has been offered to deserving students in a university and shall look at helping the students achieve their dreams who come from modest families.[26]

Personal life

Sangram Singh hails from Rohtak, Haryana. His parents are Umed Singh and Ramodevi. He has a brother and a sister. Born in the village of Madina, Sangram fought rheumatoid arthritis and got up from wheelchair to become a wrestler representing India. He also had a brief stint in Delhi Police. Sangram and actress Payal Rohatgi got engaged on 27 February 2014 at a ceremony in Payal's hometown Ahmedabad.[27] Sangram launched his sportwear range SGXbySangramSingh in Delhi on 17 March 2016 at FDCI which he targets for the benefit of common man. This launch was supported by Celebrity Designer Rohit Bal and Sangram's fiancee actress Payal Rohatgi also graced the launch.[28]
