Team changes
- Dragon Racing will manufacture its own drivetrain after using the Venturi drivetrain in the 2015–16 season.[5]
- Car manufacturer Jaguar will enter the sport, in collaboration with Williams Advanced Engineering, as a means of expanding their electric vehicle portfolio.[7][18]
- The Trulli Formula E Team withdrew from the sport due to technical and financial issues.[19]
- The Team Aguri will attempt to get a customer powertrain from Renault for season three after previously running with McLaren's powertrain from season one.[14]
Rule changes
- The maximal weight of the battery cells will increase from 200 kg in season two to 230 kg for season three.[20]
- The permitted amount of regeneration will be increased to 150 kW (previously 100 kW).[21]
- The overall weight of the car will be reduced from 888 kg to 880 kg.[20]
- Maximal power output will remain limited at 200 kW for season three, but will later be increased to 220 kW in season four and 250 kW in season five.[21]
Support Series - Roborace
A support series "Roborace" will accompany the 2016-17 season,[22] featuring 20 autonomous cars between 10 teams, with hour long races. All cars will be mechanically identical,[23] with teams differentiation being coding of AI (similar in concept to RoboCup).
Calendar
The season was announced to begin in Montreal in September 2016.[1] An ePrix in Hong Kong, tentatively to be held in October 2016,[24] has also been added to calendar as has an ePrix in Brussels.[25] Mahindra Racing and the Indian government have announced their intentions to hold an ePrix in Delhi for the 2016-2017 season.[26] On 20 May 2016, a draft calendar was released:
