Sonic the Hedgehog 2 HD is a fan remake of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Originally conceived in 2008, the game received attention by the press.[2] After it was plagued by troubles and cancelled, the project was revived again in 2014.[3] A demo was released on September 30, 2017.[4]

Development

The idea was conceived when fan art of a Sonic 2 level surfaced, which was posted to the Sonic Retro forums, which led other users to remake the game's sprites. Eventually, a game engine was found, and development began. On September 13, 2008, the development team released a early alpha tech demo.[5]The engine and art would be later revsmped.[1]

A second and more complete version released in March 2009. The version was controversial among the community as reverse engineering the demo was not possible and a "keylogger" was discovered, which could potentially collect information of the user's key presses.[6] The then programmer, under the alias of LOst [sic], was removed. The project was then cancelled by the project's leader.

The project was revived in July 2014 in an announcement by Vincent, the game's lead.[7][8] A second recruitment began, and three years later, a demo trailer was revealed, followed by a third demo days later on September 30, 2017.[1] The announcements were covered by Kotaku, Engadget[2][8] and Polygon.[3]
