South Central University for Nationalities (SCUN/SCUEC; Chinese: 中南民族大学; pinyin: Zhōngnán mínzú Dàxué; colloquially 中南民大, Pinyin: Zhōngnán mínDà) is a national university located in Hubei province's capital Wuhan, directly under the State Ethnic Affairs Commission of PRC. It is a comprehensive university founded in 1951 and the former name was South Central College for Nationalities (Chinese: 中南民族学院). In March 2002, the school adopted the current name. As one of the six national higher education institutes for ethnic groups in China, SCUN is committed to innovation in higher education for ethnic groups and thus has achieved a rapid and comprehensive development. Everyone in SCUN, led by a wise and united leadership, is making great effort for the comprehensive development of the school to improve its teaching and learning conditions, enhance its education quality, construct a harmonious campus and ultimately make SCUN an outstanding university for ethnic groups with its own distinguishing features. SCUN is well on its way to a better future.

Development and honor

In recent years, SCUN has made a steady and rapid development. It was graded as “excellence” in the undergraduate teaching assessment by the Ministry of Education in 2001. It developed from a college into a university and renamed into South-Central University for Nationalities in 2002. In September 2003, it became a university co-supported by the State of Ethnic Affairs and the Municipal Government of Wuhan. It won the honor as “Model Institute for National Ethnic Unity” in May 2005, awarded by the State Council. In 2006, SCUN was again graded as “excellence” in the undergraduate teaching assessment. In 2008, it won the title “Model Institute” granted by the State of Ethnic Affairs, and the third prize for its great achievement in “The Higher Education Campus Culture Construction” granted by the Ministry of Education. For the last consecutive 10 years, it has been awarded for five times the honor of “Model Institute in Hubei Province.”

SCUN is committed to the improvement of students in their all-round quality and innovativeness. Students are encouraged to work hard for greater achievements by the school motto of “Be a naturally easy-going person with serious belief and knowledge”. During the last six decades, more than 100,000 students graduated from SCUN and worked all around the country. They made great contributions to the unity and stability of ethnic groups and the economic and social development of ethic areas.
