In Herodotus, Themiscyra (Θεμίσκυρα) was the capital of the nation of all-female warriors called Amazons, on the river Thermodon[citation needed]. Themiscyra is also the name of an actual place located in modern-day Turkey, the proximity of which to Troy may help explain why the Amazons reached Troy so quickly in the mythological Trojan War.
