Tibor Ivan Wlassics (1936 – 28 October 1998) was a Hungarian literary scholar and academic. He was William R. Kenan Professor of Italian Studies at the University of Virginia.

Biography

Tibor Wlassics was born in Budapest, the scion of an aristocratic family.[1] His grandfather, Baron Wlassics, was a noted politician and philanthropist who, among other things, founded the Jesuit School where he would be educated.

After the revolution of 1956, his father was asked to renounce his title and surrender the family home (today the Budapest Public Library), which he refused to do, and consequently was sent to prison three times, dying soon afterwards. Tibor Wlassics was forbidden to attend the local universities because of his class. He worked as a coal miner, a bricklayer and finally, because of his linguistic ability, as a translator. Among other works, he translated Lorca's Gypsy Ballads into Hungarian.

Wlassics eventually escaped to Austria, and from there to Genoa, where he started his university studies in Italian Literature and where he met his future wife Luciana Giovannetti. Later Wlassics attended Columbia University, completing his doctorate in 1967. The same year he began teaching at the University of Pittsburgh.[2]

Highly regarded as a Dante scholar,[3] he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1986.[4] In 1987, he founded the learned journal Lectura Dantis Virginianae, which quickly became the Lectura Dantis: A Forum for Dante Research and Investigation. He also published in many European and American periodicals and was the author of several books.

Tibor Wlassics died in Charlottesville, Virginia.[5]
