In a university environment, treating everyone equally is essential for fostering an inclusive and productive atmosphere. Effective communication with diverse stakeholders - whether students, academics or professional service staff, always recognise the value each individual brings to an institution. People contribute uniquely to a university mission, and collaboration thrives when we acknowledge and respect these contributions equally. Clear, open communication built on mutual respect helps bridge any divides, ensuring that all voices are heard and that the university benefits from the full range of talents and perspectives within its community.

🌎 Diversity is the best! 🌎 When working in a multicultural institution, we inevitably meet students and colleagues from various backgrounds. Being open-minded and flexible, adjusting to those around you, is essential! 💡How to do it? 🤔 🌟First, question yourself. We often see the world based on how we were raised and taught. Begin by asking if your approaches and attitudes work across different contexts or require adjustments! 🌟Then, review your arguments and tone of voice. Can everyone relate to them, or just the locals? Do international students and colleagues understand your jokes? Could your words or actions be perceived as offensive by those around you? 💡Think!💡 🌟 Broaden your horizons and learn from those around you! 🧠💡

One of my favorite quotes is from white Christmas when Bing Crosby says to one of the sisters. “Everybody’s got an angle”. This is always top of mind anytime I communicate with diverse stakeholders. Everyone really does have an angle and if you want to create a successful line of communication and partnership with a stakeholder…find their angle.

Ao praticar a escuta ativa, criamos um espaço de diálogo mais aberto e inclusivo, onde todos se sentem valorizados. La escucha activa es un proceso de máximo valor dentro de la actividad académica. Permite detectar los diversos puntos de vista que afloran en los grupos de trabajo, coincidencias, desacuerdos, tensiones y conflictos; así como, el impacto que tienen en los involucrados tales puntos de vista. En mi experiencia he contribuido a crear espacios de libre expresión, de respeto a la diversidad de perspectivas y diálogo constructivo. Es necesario evitar la confrontación y favorecer el el intercambio, lo cual permite el enriquecimiento mutuo. Hay que entrenarse en el manejo de la escucha activa, dar ejemplo de que se puede discrepar y no por ello generar malestar.

Una de las condiciones para que la comunicación sea efectiva e inclusiva es exponer las ideas de forma sencilla, libre de jergas y tecnicismos. Nuestro mensaje debe llegar a todos los que conforman la comunidad académica. Es preciso abrir espacios para la retroalimentación para que haya una comunicación real. Hay que saber oír para poder hablar.

En mi experiencia académica la retroalimentación ha sido fundamental ya que ha contribuido para garantizar la direccionalidad de las metas propuestas. He tenido la oportunidad de recibir retroalimentación de los estudiantes, colegas, personal administrativo y obrero. De igual modo, con personas de instituciones y comunidades extra universitarias. Ello, me ha permitido evaluar mi desempeño, hacer ajustes en algunas propuestas académicas y descubrir aciertos de los cuales no tenía conciencia. No hay que temer al diálogo franco. Es una fuente de enriquecimiento para todos.
