A course to prepare high school learners from across the world to solve the sustainable development challenges of today
About us
“By understanding our shared history, we can also understand how to meet the great challenges of our time.” Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs The Ages of Globalization is a free, online, multidisciplinary course designed to prepare learners from around the world to tackle today’s challenges, from peace and security to climate change, poverty, inequalities, environmental sustainability, and artificial intelligence. Inspired by Prof. Sachs' groundbreaking book, the course propels students through place and time, merging world history, science, geography, and technology into an immersive educational adventure. UNESCO World Heritage Sites enable storytelling and exploration to bring history to life. Via video-based contents, lesson plans and a final capstone project, students will become explorers on a mission to understand humanity's interconnectedness, including vital lessons on sustainable development and the pressing challenges of the 21st century. Complementing the course is a live, monthly dialogue series between today’s global leaders and tomorrow’s changemakers, called UN at Your Doorstep. Each month, students will have the unprecedented opportunity to engage directly with world leaders and UN officials, discussing how to solve the biggest challenges of our time, with a specific focus on how young people can take action. Co-hosted by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, the Centre for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, Mission 4.7, SDGsToday and the Global Schools Program, and supported by UNESCO, the Sustainable Tourism Global Center, Hearst Foundations and SDG Academy, the course enables students to understand sustainability challenges and their complex interlinkages, explore disruptive ideas and solutions, cultivate empathy and compassion for other people and the planet, and take practical action in the personal, societal and political sphere.
