New Super Mario Bros. official website

A Mega Mushroom is a type of mushroom that enlarges the user temporarily, allowing them to walk over and destroy most objects in their path, including large and powerful enemies. A Mega Mushroom was first seen in Mario Party 4, where it was depicted as a normally proportioned mushroom with a turquoise cap; in New Super Mario Bros., it received a more distinctive design, being much bigger, bearing a bulbous yellow cap with red spots, a similar coloration to the Super Mushrooms in Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. A Mega Mushroom hops along the ground and, in their initial appearance, would actively flee from Mario. Its opposite counterpart is the Mini Mushroom, which shrinks the character.

In Super Mario 64 DS and the Super Smash Bros. series, the Super Mushroom has a similar effect to Mega Mushrooms in other games.

History[edit]

Mario Party series[edit]

Mario Party 4[edit]

A Mega Mushroom first appeared in Mario Party 4. It looks like a 1-Up Mushroom but with a slightly different color. A Mega Mushroom is obtainable either sometimes from a Mushroom Space, buying it at an item shop, from an Item Bag, or winning a mini-game on the board. It involves the user not only growing gigantic but also rolling two Dice Blocks before dashing across their combined roll, stealing ten coins from any opponents in the path. There is a variation titled the Super Mega Mushroom where the user rolls three Dice Blocks.

Mario Party 10[edit]

A Mega Mushroom is part of amiibo Party mode in Mario Party 10, working like before by turning the user giant and having them steal coins from opponents they pass.

Mario Party: Star Rush[edit]

A Mega Mushroom appears in Bowser's Space Race of Mario Party: Star Rush, not only making the user gigantic but also giving them three points from throwing a bomb at Bowser.

Mario Party: The Top 100 / Mario Party Superstars[edit]

A Mega Mushroom appears in the returning minigame Mush Pit in Mario Party: The Top 100 and Mario Party Superstars, replacing Mushrooms from the Mario Party 3 versions.

Mario Pinball Land[edit]

Mega Mushrooms are items in Mario Pinball Land. They are red-capped, making them look like Super Mushrooms. The effect of the Mega Mushroom defeats enemies when touched.

Mario Kart series[edit]

Mario Kart Arcade GP subseries[edit]

It appears with the name Giant Mushroom in Mario Kart Arcade GP, Mario Kart Arcade GP 2, and Mario Kart Arcade GP DX, as one of the items obtainable from the Item Box. The Mega Mushroom enlarges the player character and kart temporarily.

Mario Kart Wii[edit]

Mega Mario
Mario using a Mega Mushroom in Mario Kart Wii

The Mega Mushroom is an item in Mario Kart Wii, obtainable anywhere from 4th to 8th place (especially 6th, which has a 10% chance), as well as 9th in VS races only. The user becomes gigantic while the Mega Mushroom theme music players from New Super Mario Bros., and the player can squish opponents along the way, slowing and causing them to lose items. Players using a Star can knock aside a player affected by the Mega Mushroom, though combining the two knocks all opponents aside. Up to two Mega Mushrooms can be activate at once. CPUs using the Mega Mushroom get a speed boost, do not slow off-road, and are mostly invulnerable except to the Star, Bullet Bill, and Blooper. Players using a Mega Mushroom shrink to normal size if Lightning hits them.

Mario Kart Tour[edit]

The Mega Mushroom in Mario Kart Tour works like it does in the previous game, except the theme music does not play and characters using the item return to normal size if an item from a rival hits them. They also receive no speed nor off-road advantages. Since version 2.12.0, players receive points from hitting Mega opponents.

If the player runs into an Item Box as they crash and they have Auto Item activated, the growth caused by any Mega Mushroom used up from their inventory instantly recovers their driver from the crash.

New Super Mario Bros.[edit]

Artwork from New Super Mario Bros., which standardized the look of Mega Mushrooms

The look of a Mega Mushroom has been standardized to yellow with red spots since New Super Mario Bros., reminiscent of Super Mushrooms from Super Mario Bros., and they are also larger. It is a power-up item that changes Mario into Mega Mario, who then destroys any enemy and many objects along the way. When the effects wear off, Mario returns to normal, with up to five 1-Up Mushrooms appearing per each green segment filled. There is a Mega Mushroom in the levels Worlds 1-1, 1-2, 4-4 and 7-5; they are also found at Orange Toad Houses as well as sometimes from Red Flying ? Blocks and Hammer Bros. The effects of the Mega Mushroom in the Mario vs. Luigi mode is mainly for knocking a Big Star from one's opponent, though a Mega Mushroom can also appear for the losing player if they get eight coins.

In the E3 2005 trailer build and at least one of the 2005 demo builds of New Super Mario Bros., the Mega Mushroom had the same colors as the Super Mushroom, but it was changed to a yellow cap with red spots in the final version.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

Mega Mushroom

Mega Mushrooms are items in New Super Mario Bros. 2, working the same as before, except one appears only from shooting fireballs into a ! Pipe in World 1-2, World 5-6, and World Mushroom-3, even in co-op. They are also in a ? Block in the third level of the Gold Rush Pack and the first level of the Coin Challenge Pack C, as well as another in the first level of the Gold Classics Pack.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]

Mega Mushrooms appear in Super Mario 3D World and its port. They retain their usual effect, also giving the user a lower-pitched voice, and its effects are still temporary, also wearing off by entering a Warp Box. A Mega Mushroom appears in seven levels: Super Bell Hill, The Bullet Bill Express, Tricky Trapeze Theater, Rainbow Run, Super Block Land, Gargantuan Grotto and Gigantic Seasick Wreck.

While the power-up goes unused in the Bowser's Fury mode, there is an unused power-up internally titled KinokoGiga ("Giga Mushroom"), which resembles the Mega Mushroom but is larger and has a red cap with yellow spots. It turns Mario into a state identical to taking damage as Giga Cat Mario.

Super Mario Run[edit]

In Super Mario Run, players can obtain a Mega Mushroom Statue as a building in Kingdom Builder. The Mega Mushroom is on top of an Empty Block. Two Toads can stand on the statue. It is a 4★ item. Once unlocked, it can be purchased from the Shop for 1500 coins. It can be won from the Bonus Game in Remix 10 mode, even before unlocking it.

Super Mario Odyssey[edit]

Although the Mega Mushroom does not appear in Super Mario Odyssey, some mushrooms in the Mushroom Kingdom closely resemble the design of a Mega Mushroom.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

The Mega Mushroom appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a sticker. It can be equipped to any fighter in Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary to increase the amount of damage healed from food by 2 percent.

Mario & Luigi series[edit]

Broque Monsieur sometimes uses a Mega Mushroom during his Vacuum command tutorial in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and its remake, though Bowser can avoid being rammed by punching Broque Monsieur as he changes. Bowser Memory M also uses the Mega Mushroom (not a Super Mushroom like the original version) in one of its attacks.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]

A Mega Mushroom is used by Luigi to become giant during his Bros. Attack Mega Thwonk in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games[edit]

Mega Mushrooms are items in both the Wii version and Nintendo DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. They are items that increase the size of a character or object in each event they appear in. Furthermore, in the console version, Mega Mushrooms also increases the user's defense and speed in Dream Ice Hockey, and gives them twice the resistance and snowballs dealing double the damage in Dream Snowball Fight. They specifically increase the size of the curling stone in Dream Curling of the console version and in its handheld equivalent, Curling Bowling.

Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash[edit]

Mega Mushrooms are items in Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash. They turn the character giant for 30 seconds, helping them hit the ball, but a Body Shot can make it end prematurely. The user flashes white three seconds before the item wears off. Players under the effects of a Mega Mushroom also have a lower voice. Instead of the original music from New Super Mario Bros., a rock cover of the original tune plays when being powered up from the Mega Mushroom.

Other appearances[edit]

The Mega Mushroom makes a cameo appearance in the Wii U version of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 as part of its exclusive content.

Unused appearances[edit]

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]

The Mega Mushroom was originally going to return in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, but was removed from the final game due to causing a problem with multiplayer: the character would be able to destroy everything while taking up space on the screen.

Mario Kart 7[edit]

The Mega Mushroom was originally slated to return in Mario Kart 7, along with the Fake Item Box, but both were scrapped from the official release.
