Rocks[1] or boulders[2] are a recurring obstacle that occurs on world maps. They block paths until they are destroyed by some mechanism, though sometimes they can be gone around.

History[edit]

Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]

In Super Mario Bros. 3, rocks appear on the path and as scenery, and often block either shortcuts or bonuses such as Toad's Houses or Spade Panels. They can be destroyed with a Hammer, though as there are more rocks than Hammers, not all of the blocking rocks are able to be destroyed.

Donkey Kong Land[edit]

In Donkey Kong Land, rocks,[3] also referred to as road blocks,[4][5] appear in the first two worlds, Gangplank Galleon Ahoy! and Kremlantis. They can be destroyed by collecting an explosive barrel at the end of a nearby level and walking to the rock.

Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble![edit]

In Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!, rocks appear in Krematoa. Boomer uses his explosives to blow them up one at a time after being given enough Bonus Coins.
