Make Noise MultiMod | Overview & Explorations

video upload by Sarah Belle Reid

"A walkthrough of Make Noise’s newest Eurorack module, MultiMod, a multi-function modulation utility—with a few tricks up its sleeve.

This video contains a module overview, demo and patch tutorials. We’ll start with a panel tour of the MultiMod, and then dive into different patch examples that use MultiMod as a multi-LFO tool and a CV processor. I'll also share some "extended techniques" (ways of using MultiMod that extend beyond its intended use case), and demonstrate some ideas for using it to generate and process sound in unusual ways."

With MultiMod...from one control signal, we create many.

MultiMod represents a new approach to complex modulations: it takes a single control signal and copies it 8 times, additionally modifying those copies by weighted adjustment of their relative phase and speed. The result is a flock of related modulation signals, all derived from the same single input.

Phase sets the spacing of the signal copies in time, weighted by channel, with each progressive channel getting more out of phase from the original Signal and from each other. Spread allows for varispeeding the copies by different amounts, with each getting progressively faster or slower than the original Signal. Time determines the range of time captured at the input and therefore also the depth of modulation across copies of the input signal when Phase and Spread are manipulated. MultiMod also includes Tempo, Hold, and Reset features, and a variety of Read Shapes for temporal rearrangement of input signals.

When the input is not patched, MultiMod generates an LFO that is copied eight times and manipulated in the same ways.

MultiMod is built on a brand new DSP hardware developed for the New Universal Synthesizer System. It offers eight high resolution outputs, with signal input and output ranges approaching the upper limits of the analog eurorack modular system. All I/O is capable of a 20V range at +/-10V, greatly exceeding the typical 0-5V CV input ranges on typical digital modules.

INTRODUCING XP32

video upload by Squarp instruments

"💥 Introducing xp32, the perfect expander for unlocking 32 assignable CV or Gate outputs, amplifying the creative power of your Hermod+ sequencer.

🐙 Transform your Hermod+ into a 16-track CV/Gate powerhouse, an expansive MIDI/USB-to-CV interface, a preset manager, or customize your outputs to suit even the most intricate modular setups.

🧠 xp32 opens up a new world of possibilities for both live performances and studio setups, giving you the flexibility to bring your most complex musical ideas to life.

PATCH NOTES & CHAPTERS
0:00 HOW TO SETUP
Setting up the xp32 is incredibly simple. By connecting the included expander ribbon cable to the back of Hermod+, xp32 integrates instantly, no configuration required.

0:16 TR1 : DEFAULT LAYOUT
By default, xp32 outputs note pitch, note gate, note velocity, and modulation.
All these outputs are automatically mapped to the USB keyboard and can be recorded directly, preserving all the nuances of natural playing.
I'm also adjusting the range of the velocity outputs from -10V to +10V to maximize Atlantis's inputs response.

0:53 TR2 : GATE LAYOUT
For track 2, I'm setting all outputs to gate. Each output responds to a different MIDI note and is connected to Rample, which is handling the drums.

1:24 TR3 : CV/GATE + 4 MODULATION
A regular CV/Gate output from Hermod+ is used to generate random notes, which are sent to Plaits. I'm using 4 voices of xp32 to send all 4 available MOD lanes to Plaits. These modulation signals are accessed via the STEP ANALYZER and randomly generated by pressing STEP+Y on Hermod+.

2:12 TR4 : EXTERNAL MIDI CC TO CV
I start by connecting Hapax to Hermod+ via USB. Hapax is sending 4 MIDI CC messages, which are converted into CV and output on the 4 voices of XP32's track 4. These signals are then routed through the system to various controls.

Tubbutec Introduces Brainstep Controller

video upload by Tubbutec

via tubbutec

"Brainstep Controller is an expander for our Brainstep eurorack module. While it is possible to change Brainstep’s envelope and LFO parameters using the menu, Brainstep Controller creates a more direct, hands on approach.

The 25 sliders let you control most accent, ADSR and LFO parameters. Additionaly, the glide time can be controlled.
How to connect

Brainstep Controller is a specialized MIDI controller using TRS-A input and output jacks. A stereo jack cable needs to be used to connect the controller’s output the Brainstep’s TRS MIDI input.
MIDI data coming into the controller’s TRS input is merged with the controller data and sent to Brainstep. This way, no MIDI input is lost when using the controller.

Visualizing parameter changes
When receiving data from the controller, Brainstep can display the currently changing value on its display. To turn on this feature, go the Brainstep’s configuration menu and select Misc->Display->Overlay timeout. Here, you can set the number of seconds the value is shown, or turn this feature off.

Kaona Introduces Sisyphus Granular Eurorack Module w/ 8 Original Filters

via Kaona

Google translated:

Sisyphus is organized around a granular engine and a palette of eight original filters. Its granular system allows several grains to coexist in a single stereo sound stream that combine with each other.

This filter is based on a global granular design of the sound: it is not a granular engine followed by a filter but a real integration of filtering in the process of establishing the grain. Each grain generated carries the filtering characteristics defined by the musician and will be combined with the other grains according to evolving and configurable patterns.

The filters have been the subject of a completely specific development and are not from the usual libraries: they will therefore have a specific color that we let you explore!

Filters
→ Lowpass
Attenuates high frequencies beyond the cutoff frequency. Filter at 12 dB/octave.

→ Highpass
Attenuates low frequencies below the cutoff frequency. Filters at 12 dB/octave.

→ Bandpass
Let a band of frequencies around the cutoff frequency pass. Filters at 12 dB/octave.

→ Notch
Widens around the cutoff frequency and lets the rest pass.

→ Peak
Boosts the band around the cutoff frequency, while letting the rest of the spectrum pass without cutting it drastically.

→ Comb
Creates a series of cancellations and resonances, based on an internal delay and feedback.

NoiseSpace - Noise textures and backgrounds for iOS and Mac. First preview.

video upload by Igor Vasiliev

"This app ditches factory presets! :) Just hit the "Create" button, and you'll get a brand-new preset each time, with unique sound and rich texture. All you need to do is tweak a few parameters to better match your vision.
~
NoiseSpace is an experimental generator based on simplex noise, which is then used in a granular synthesis algorithm. This design allows for the creation of a vast array of diverse waveforms rich in harmonics with a rich low-frequency spectrum. The generator is controlled by just a few simple parameters. Despite its somewhat chaotic and atonal nature, it is highly suitable for generating industrial sound structures, ominous, foreboding noise and backgrounds.

ACME XP60 - Oberheim Xpander Clone In the Works

Spotted this one on Amazona.de.

The following is Google translated from the article:

"The ACME XP60 has set itself an extremely ambitious goal: the polyphonic synthesizer is to be nothing less than a 'faithful replica' of one of the greatest vintage classics: the Oberheim Xpander. The project by developer Markus Malik, who has so far offered modifications, replacement boards and repairs, is actually already in an advanced phase.

ACME XP60 - a compact Xpander

Admittedly, given the name ACME, you might think that the whole project is just another hoax report that comes around every year. But the XP60 is real and the electronics of the prototype are ready, although according to Malik there is still some need for optimization in the layout of the circuit board and the power supply.

Like its role model, the XP60 is also a six-voice analog synthesizer. However, the design is smaller, because the device, which actually has a desktop format, also fits in a 19" rack.
Not only the structure of the sound generation was adopted, but also the operating concept with the three displays. One improvement, however, are the controls with LED rings, whose colors can be customized.

For the sound generation, modern counterparts (clone chips) of the CEM3374 (Dual VCO) and CEM3372 (VC Mix-VCF-VCA) circuits used at the time are used. As a reference, developer Markus Malik was able to build the voice cards for the prototype with original oscillator ICs. In blind tests with mixed operation, no differences could be found between the original and clone chips.

There were also attempts to discretely recreate the circuit of the IC with transistors, but despite adjusted values, there were no satisfactory results in terms of temperature stability and FM, so this approach was not pursued further.

Doepfer, among others, has shown that the implementation of the complex multimode filter with its 15 different filter types can be successful with the A-106-6 XP VCF module.

Initially, no new firmware was written, but the original OS was used during development. The firmware is very complex, as envelopes, LFOs and other modulation options are also implemented using software. Tom Oberheim's consent was requested for the use of the firmware.

If the original firmware is retained, this will also entail certain restrictions, as it does not include parameter control with MIDI CCs, for example, but only Sysex. The developer may not be able to avoid creating his own OS sooner or later.

A small series of 50 units is planned initially, but a continuation is not ruled out. Information on the release, distribution and, above all, the price of the ACME XP60 cannot be given at this time, as there are too many factors that could still influence this.

So there is still a lot to do and we will report on the further progress of development."

DIY Analog-Hybrid Synthesizer with Rene Schmitz Vakuum-Tube VCF

video upload by Andreas Remshagen

"At first I wanted to build a complete vacuum tube synthesizer but I had problems with the vacuum tube VCO and the correct intonation over several octaves. That's why I decided to build two AS3360 chip VCOs and run them through a vacuum tube mixer. I used Rene Schmitz's vacuum tube filter as the VCF. ADSR, VCA and ring modulator run on AS chips. The envelope curve display is done via a Toyo 6E5 Magic Eye"

Centrevillage X-VCA - Versatile Crossfade VCA

video upload by centrevillage

"X-VCA is a versatile and compact 2ch linear analog VCA.

The common offset voltage controls and the A/B channel attenuverters make crossfading, panning, and more easy. It can also be used as a simple 2ch linear VCA mixer.

Multiple X-VCAs can be chained together and used as a multi-channel VCA mixer.

The input CV is bipolar, -5V is silences, +5V is unity gain. This specification makes it easy to use as a crossfader or panner.

Additionally, each signal level is displayed on the LEDs, making it easy to understand the status."

NEW MODULE: TIME

video upload by LARIX ELEKTRO

LARIX ELEKTRO TIME, Eurorack module OVERVIEW

video upload by LARIX ELEKTRO

"New Eurorack module: Swiss knif of Time management, for GATE signals:
Trigger to Gate converter
Clock generator
Trigger delay
Ramp generator
Connector for the Shift-R module, to add Clock Division option.

Of course, as usual, with CV contrôle and a lot of I/O.

Module available now, here: www.larix-elektro.com"

WHAT'S THAT THING ?
In fact, it's simple: it convert a trigger signal (hm, any signals) into a gate signal with CV controle of the time.
With its many inputs and outputs, it's the perfect companion to your favorite ADSR envelope.

It's also a clock generator, a rampe generator, and even a clock divider with the Shift-R extension.

The GATE output is augmented by 2 other outputs: START and END, which generate (as their name suggests) a trig at the beginning of the gate and one at the end.
The END allows this module to be used as a Trig delay, or to trigger another envelope at the end of a note, for example.
The START's output trig is generated each time a trig is received as input, even if the GATE is still active as output. Perfect for retriggering an envelope (if the corresponding entry exists on your module, of course...).

The GATE can be forced to zero by an RST input. (Think of HiHat Open and Close for example)
The input trig and RST each have a push button.

Finally, a switch allows the module to be transformed into a clock generator.
The input triggers the clock, and the RST stops it.

An additional output, not so common for this type of module, provides a ramp for the duration of the GATE.
This gives you access to a voltage that increases throughout the duration of the GATE.
Useful as is, or to send to a waveshaper for example.

The RITOURNELLE Shift-R, adds 8 trigger outputs.
The Rampe value is converted into an 8-bit word.
This allows for clock-type signals at smaller divisions than the duration of the GATE (or the clock in LOOP mode)
A kind of clock divider.
