Based on the autobiography of celebrity chef Nigel Slater, Toast (2010) is a dramatic comedy starring young Freddy Highmore as Nigel, himself. When we first meet Nigel, he's living a rather pleasant existence with his asthmatic mom (Victoria Hamilton) and his grumpy dad (Ken Stott). Even though his mom is a terrible cook who constantly feeds him and his factory worker dad toast after she burns the family meal, he loves her and is devastated when she dies. In her place comes his stepmom Joan (Helena Bonham Carter), who he absolutely loathes. She's mean to him but considers herself an amazing chef, so to get back at her he decides to do whatever he can to one-up her meals! He'll take home economics classes, study recipe books, and even get a job in the kitchen of a pub so that he can attack her confidence, especially when it comes to her famous lemon meringue pie. This will lead to a lifelong love of cooking for Nigel, even after his dad dies and he gets out of the shadow of his stepmom. He'll also discover a lifelong love of hot dudes, because Nigel will pick up a few boy crushes along the way.In the mood for rump roast?
