THE EMPTINESS MACHINE
by LINKIN PARK
The Emptiness Machine is the first single released by nu-metal US group Linkin Park since the death of main vocalist Chester Bennington in 2017.
Notably introducing Emily Armstrong as the group's new vocalist, the track (written by Armstrong, Mike Shinoda, Colin Britton, Brad Delson, Dave Farrell and Joe Hahn and produced by Shinoda) was released September 5 2024 via Warner Records/Machine Shop as the lead single from Linkin Park's forthcoming eighth album, From Zero.
Speaking on the new track and the introduction of both Armstrong on vocals and Colin Britton on drums, Shinoda said in a statement: "“Before Linkin Park, our first band name was Xero. This album title refers to both this humble beginning and the journey we’re currently undertaking. Sonically and emotionally, it is about past, present, and future—embracing our signature sound, but new and full of life. It was made with a deep appreciation for our new and longtime bandmates, our friends, our family, and our fans. We are proud of what Linkin Park has become over the years, and excited about the journey ahead.
"The more we worked with Emily and Colin, the more we enjoyed their world-class talents, their company, and the things we created. We feel really empowered with this new lineup and the vibrant and energized new music we’ve made together. We’re weaving together the sonic touchpoints we’ve been known for and still exploring new ones."
From Zero, the first Linkin Park album of original material since Bennington's death was released 15 November 2024, via Warner/Machine Shop, entering straight in at Number 1 on the UK Official Albums Chart. Lead single The Emptiness Machine debuted at Number 4 two months earlier, their highest ever UK chart position and sixth Top 10. Their previous chart peak was achieved with 2007's What I've Done (Number 6).
