Another of Europe’s oldest surviving dresses: The Florentine gown, ca. 1550-60. Pisa: Museo di Palazzo Reale. Source: Pinterest. This red velvet dress Is one of two surviving dresses from Florence during the period 1540-1580. The other is Eleonora of Toledo’s burial dress. This dress was once believed to have also been worn by Eleanor. Description Noblewomen from 1580s Venice (could be courtesans as well, the only difference was that courtesans weren't allowed to wear jewellery. If you've seen the "Dangerous Beauty" movie and think that courtesans have worn flowing, sheer dresses while noblewomen were forced to wear black habits, forget it.
