Part 1 Ch. I- Winston Smith is a 39 year-old living in Oceania and working for the Ministry of Truth under the Party. The Party controls nearly every aspect of everyone’s lives. Thought Police monitor citizens through telescreens, which are in every room. Winston has one small space in his apartment that telescreen can’t monitor, and Winston writes in his diary here. Unknowingly, Winston writes “Down with Big Brother” in his diary, committing thought crime.
