From the Solnhofen Limestone Formation, Germany, Late Jurassic. Archaeopteryx, meaning "Ancient Wing," was discovered in 1859. Perhaps the most famous fossils in the world, ten skeleton specimens are now known, some amazingly well preserved. Like modern birds, Archaeopteryx had long wing and tail feathers, and has been regarded as the first bird. We now know that complex feathers and other birdlike features were widespread among the meat-eating dinosaurs known as maniraptorans. While…

Archaeopteryx, illustration. Eleven specimens of Archaeopteryx have been found, all from the Solenhofen limestones of the Late Jurassic period (195-135 million years ago), in Bavaria, Germany. Archaeopteryx shows that birds evolved from dinosaurs. The claws seen on its wings are a combined reptilian and avian characteristic. So I was commissioned to create an illustration of archaeopteryx lithographica for a gift for my client's husband's birthday. I was super excited since I love archaeopteryx lithographica, so I came up with this. I'm really happy with the lighting and pose in this one. My client's husband loved his gift and already has it hung up in his house, which makes me so happy. All in all a very fun and successful commission. Archaeopteryx is considered by many to be the link between dinosaurs and birds. It had teeth and claws, but it also had feathers and wings. Archaeopteryx was first discovered in 1860 in Bavarian lithographic limestone quarries. Since that time, only five other specimens have been uncovered, with the best specimens being at the Humboldt Museum in Berlin, Germany and the British Museum. Archaeopteryx is widely thought of as the first bird. It looked very similar to some modern birds, and…
