A pigeon-sized, four-winged dinosaur known as Microraptor had black iridescent feathers when it roamed the Earth 130 million years ago, according to new research led by a team of American and Chinese scientists that includes Museum researchers. The dinosaur’s fossilized plumage is the earliest record of iridescent feather color.

Archaeopteryx, illustration. Eleven specimens of Archaeopteryx have been found, all from the Solenhofen limestones of the Late Jurassic period (195-135 million years ago), in Bavaria, Germany. Archaeopteryx shows that birds evolved from dinosaurs. The claws seen on its wings are a combined reptilian and avian characteristic.

So I was commissioned to create an illustration of archaeopteryx lithographica for a gift for my client's husband's birthday. I was super excited since I love archaeopteryx lithographica, so I came up with this. I'm really happy with the lighting and pose in this one.
