14K views · 33K reactions | The best advice I ever received for creating the illusion of depth was that in order for the background to drop back further, you need to use the cooler colours of the painting to create the background, and the warmer colours when creating the foreground. For example if I have a blurry floral scene, I will mix cooler greens, blues magentas, and violets for the background, and use warm greens, oranges, yellows, and pinks, for the flowers in the foreground.

I start with @goldenpaints heavy body acrylic range these paints are already quite thick , and the colours are pigmented enough that I can add in a thickener and they keep their colour. Next I use the extra heavy matte gel (also by Golden) and mix 1 part paint to 3 parts heavy gel. I like a matte finish since my backgrounds are also matte, but the extra heavy gel gloss is also great!
