14K views · 33K reactions | The best advice I ever received for creating the illusion of depth was that in order for the background to drop back further, you need to use the cooler colours of the painting to create the background, and the warmer colours when creating the foreground. For example if I have a blurry floral scene, I will mix cooler greens, blues magentas, and violets for the background, and use warm greens, oranges, yellows, and pinks, for the flowers in the foreground.

The other thing I do to create the illusion of depth is create different textures in the painting - for my background I make them with a soft, flat, matte texture usually on watercolor paper or canvas, and the foreground I use very heavy body acrylic paint to create a 3D like feel which pulls your focus forwa Andrea Art, Water Colouring, Illusion Of Depth, Paint Tutorials, Painting Instructions, Colour Painting, The Best Advice, Matte Texture, Best Advice

(I should mention this is not a paid add, I’m just in love with @goldenpaints and going to gush over the versatility of their products!!)

I start with @goldenpaints heavy body acrylic range these paints are already quite thick , and the colours are pigmented enough that I can add in a thickener and they keep their colour. Next I use the extra heavy matte gel (also by Golden) and mix 1 part paint to 3 parts heavy gel. I like a matte finish since my backgrounds are also matte, but the extra heavy gel gloss is also great!
