Who says that herb spirals need to be for culinary or medicinal use? Why not plant a permaculture-inspired dye garden in a spiral layout? In this Botanical Dyer's Garden plan, we have Hopi Red Dye Amaranth as the centerpiece, surrounded by Hopi Black Dye Sunflower and Safflower. On the outskirts, hawaiian marigold, indigo, dyer's coreopsis, corn poppy, and bachelor's button provide a range of plant-based color!

Jamie Young - Natural Dye Educator on Instagram: "Some of my personal favorite natural dye plants for creating eco prints. 🌿🌼 Flowers: hibiscus, cosmos, coreopsis, black knight scabiosa Leaves: cosmos, tree of heaven, geranium, hemp, sumac, Chinese pistache, & redud The truth is, with a good, adjustable mordanting recipe, almost any plant will make a clear beautiful print. The key is being able to match the dye constituents within the plant to the proper mordants. Many plants contain multiple phytochemicals and can create a variety of prints depending on the pretreatment that is used. For instance, a tannin rich leaf such as Chinese pistache, is capable of creating yellow, green, lavender and dark purple prints when slight adjustments are made to the mordant recipe. 🌈 I make this easy Tree Of Heaven, Eco Printing Textiles, Purple Prints, Leaf Dyeing, Flowers Hibiscus, Green Lavender, Jamie Young, Black Knight, Colorful Background

True dye plants contain specific phytochemicals that produce colorful dyes. Flavonoids are a key group among these dye constituents. Derived from the Latin word ‘Flavia,’ meaning yellow, most flavonoids are yellow. However, the beautiful but less stable blue, green, red, and purple anthocyanin-based dyes are also flavonoids. Jamie Young - Natural Dye Educator on Instagram: "Fall coreopsis on organic cotton socks 🌼🍂 One can never have too many flower printed socks for the cozy months. 🪺🌾 Before being bundled and steamed, the socks were scoured and mordanted with natural prefixatives that allow the dyes within the flowers to bind or create attachments to the fiber. 🗝 This process allows the socks to be worn and washed with minimal fading. ✨ Fall coreopsis blooms made possible by succession planting throughout the summer this year. 🌲🌞" Coreopsis Dye, Earthy Tie Dye, Natural Dye Flower Print, Natural Black Dye Fabric, Natural Red Dye Fabric, Printed Socks, Succession Planting, Jamie Young, Natural Dye

I’ve got about 15 Coreopsis Tinctoria plants in the dye garden, and they just have started flowering rather prolifically! The variety is ‘Roulette’, which gives a few different types of yellow and red blooms (seeds purchased from Chiltern Seeds). I’ve been picking blooms daily and drying them until
