After raising the ceiling joists and doubling the rafters-- 9 ' ceiling. The existing ceiling joists (rafter ties) were long spans of untreated doug fir 2x4s on 24" centers. This was crisscrossed by 1x2 furring. 2x6 rafter ties were added just shy of 1/3 the height of the rafter, which maintains the proper geometry to resist roof thrust (I hope...).
