Music had been used to accompany poems during the medieval era. The Elizabethans taste for the Theatre was soon enhanced by the accompaniment of music. It was only a short step to combine the accustomed music with its accompanying verse with the exciting pageantry of the Elizabethan theatre. Greek theaters had large semicircle amphitheaters for the audience and could be built into a hill.  In the center of the amphitheater is an orchestra.  Behind the orchestra is the skene which served as a place for actors to change masks and costumes.
