Ch. 7: Memory (forgetting)
In chapter 7, Ettinger, (2018, p. 263-303) covers memory. Ettinger speaks specifically about forgetting in the form of trace decay. This theory states that our neuron connections decay over time, making retrieving certain memories harder or virtually impossible. The photo I chose illustrates some factors and theories in remembering and forgetting. Another theory Ettinger speaks about is interference. It is believed that external factors, such as the environment, or internal factors, such as overwhelming thoughts, can lead to forgetting information. These discoveries regarding memory loss have led to advances in medicine and increased studies of certain treatments to address the problem of memory decay. With a growing knowledge of what causes memory loss, we can heal sicknesses.

Types of Memory
Memory isn't just a single thing; there are multiple types. Explicit memory is under conscious control and involves factual information. Implicit memory is not under conscious control, and includes procedural memories (i.e. remembering how to do things) and emotional memories (including trauma memories). There is both short-term and long-term memory, and sleep is a crucial time for the consolidation of long-term meories.
