When the Duc de Richleau (Christopher Lee) and Rex Van Ryn (Leon Greene) arrive at a fashionable party thrown by de Richleau's protégé, Simon Aron (Patrick Mower), they soon realize that the party is in fact a gathering of a Satanic cult, led by the high priest Mocata (Charles Gray), that plans to initiate the beautiful Tanith (Nike Arrighi) that night. It's up to de Richleau and Van Ryn to defeat the devil-worshiping Mocata and save innocent young Tanith and the others from a terrible fate.

I really can’t see what so many people see in this film. I know we have to accept that it was made in 1968 so the “special effects” are not anyway near special by today’s standards but even for then seeing a spider who kept changing size I comparison to his surroundings and a horse whose hooves seemed to be dancing killed any kind of horror it was supposed to invoke. I was also left wondering how Christopher Lee managed to keep a straight face as he trotted out all kinds of mumbo jumbo that he just happened to know. At least they tried to point us in the right direction when a moment was meant to be tense by cranking up the tense music. Although this was not enough. The finale was just weird where things just happened and you had no idea why and it was left to Christopher Lee to explain what had happened because it certainly wasn’t clear to us watching. Finally it went on far too long.

The Devil Rides Out offers an entertaining journey into the world of satanic cults, making it a very good horror film in its own right. Despite some dated special effects, it remains suspenseful, engaging, and highly enjoyable—no doubt influenced by the presence of Christopher Lee in the cast!

A unique hammer film that from the get go confronts satanism. Most leave it until the end and none covered it in such depth. The melodrama was a bit much, but I enjoyed it. Saw on TCM.

For an older film this looks fantastic. The visual effects are old-fashioned but engaging enough that it doesn't take you out of the experience. They are all very real feeling effects. It is a visual film without being too stupid. The sound is a little scrappy but not too bad. Could be a lot worse. Interesting devil story with a lot of content meaning it has a very good pace. The tone is not as scary as it should be. It is a little too happy and camp which isn't a bad thing except when you're talking about the Devil! Overall surprisingly enjoyable.
