Critics Consensus

Aggressively strange and willfully unfunny, the misguided Mortdecai sounds a frightfully low note in Johnny Depp's post-Pirates filmography.

Kimberley Jones Austin Chronicle This one's dead on arrival. Rated: 1/5 Jan 29, 2015 Full Review Scott Tobias The Dissolve The jokes are astonishingly unfunny, splitting the cast between those desperate to please, and those looking to slip off with most of their dignity intact. Rated: 1/5 Jan 26, 2015 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times This wilfully terrible film marks a significant juncture in Johnny Depp's peculiar career. It is, to him, as the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was to the Balkan League. Rated: 1/5 Jan 26, 2015 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies I feel as though “Mortdecai” revolves around a continuous inside joke that I was never let in on. Surely a comedy can’t be this anemic, lame, and humorless. Rated: 1/5 Aug 24, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review This madcap caper exists only to provide an excuse for the movie's crude zaniness and gratingly repetitive gags. Rated: 1/4 Jul 12, 2022 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse Capers flicks of a bygone era had a swingin', hip feel of controlled chaos not overplayed farce but Depp is pedal-to-the-metal, quirking-it-up in a display completely without charm and worse, without wit. Carlos A Must be some willfully bitter people out there, otherwise I can’t explain why this movie was/is so badly received. It is quirky and childish but also intriguing and witty. And it doesn’t take itself to serious. It is over the top and light but it certainly has its class. Loved it the first time I watched and loved it the second time many years later. I am very harsh on movies, but this just isn’t a bad one. It is not a genre defining masterpiece or a great work of cinematic art. It is in my opinion simple and honest. It is just a great laugh and thus very good entertainment. I can only recommend. Cheers. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/09/24 Full Review Me D Morticia is a steaming pile of rubbish that fails to make you laugh. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/04/24 Full Review Frey Le K Just finished watching this movie and it's hilarious I don't understand why people aren't watching this more. Fantastic movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/11/24 Full Review Tommy C With some wilful sense of sarcasm, this parody's surprisingly poetic puns become quite enjoyable. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/24 Full Review Leon V Brilliant comedy. Intellectually stimulating. Loved it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/24 Full Review Ed B Weird but very watchable. Simple plot but fun and all filmed. Some big stars and we found it quite funny. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/24 Full Review Read all reviews
