Critics Consensus

Lee Daniels' foray into horror works best when it leans into his melodramatic preoccupations, but it fails to deliver the exorcism goods.

Claudia Puig FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) Fun if you go in without expectations. Sep 16, 2024 Full Review Robert Levin Newsday It's yet another haunted house movie that barely distinguishes itself from the pack. Rated: 1.5/4 Sep 4, 2024 Full Review Ben Travis Empire Magazine Well-intentioned, with a strong performance from Andra Day — but uneven human drama eventually gives way to boringly familiar horror tropes. All around, The Deliverance struggles to deliver. Rated: 2/5 Sep 3, 2024 Full Review Rubén Rosario MiamiArtZine Daniels is in unhinged mode here, reveling in the disreputable, R-rated trappings...this is trash. Tasty, succulent trash. Sep 16, 2024 Full Review Austin Burke Austin Burke/Flick Fan Nation While the deliverance tackles some important and interesting themes in the beginning, the plot slowly unravels and becomes a generic and poorly handled horror movie by the end. Rated: 4/10 Sep 13, 2024 Full Review Jayne Nelson Radio Times The final act is a sludgy mess of gross-out gimmicks, ultimately too disappointing to offer up any real scares. Keena A I like it although it was dark & more different than anything I ever seen. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/21/24 Full Review Timmy S Straight dog water! Do yourself a huge favor and turn on anything else in the entire world but this movie. It’s fucking comically bad, the acting is forced and hilarious, the story is so played out oooohhh another hunted house with a scary demon that doesn’t do anything scary but make the kids hit their heads on walls and go down to the “scary” basement and kill cats. You spend 80% of the movie like wtf am I watching and the other 20% you’re like wtf am I watching. I even tried to find one redeeming thing like I would root for the mom but honestly she’s a crazy alcoholic and with or without the demon someone needs to involve CPS cause she’s fucking nuts. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review Joshua M Should have been an hour shorter. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review Bruno S Mais uma porcaria lacradora, não percam seu tempo! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review Ulises A Insulting. Even the dialogues seem copy-pasted from other movies. What happened with Glenn Close? Acting in this crap? Incredible. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review William K I made this account to glaze this movie! I had originally watch this movie due to one of the lines of this movie bouncing around the internet (if you know, you know). I had thought it was going to be a bad movie or so bad it's good, but I was surprised to genuinely enjoy this movie. What makes this movie so interesting is that haunting in the first 2/3 or the movie had me second guessing if there actually was a ghost or demon terrorizing the family. The family was already at each others throats at the start, so strange occurrences can be explained through the context of abuse, alcoholism, and poverty. The haunting is secondary when compared to the family dynamic, something I notice most reviews have missed. Do we watch Hereditary because of there spooky scares? No, we are drawn into the family as we see how they deal with grief. Despite how Ebony is portrayed as the worst image of a mother, you can't help but feel bad for her when she tries her best to support her children and apologies to them when she is in the wrong. I would recommend people who haven't seen the movie to give it a watch before they draw conclusions. If you have seen and still don't like it, that's cool, we all have our tastes.
