Critics Consensus

Director David Schwimmer gets some gut-wrenching performances out of his actors but he still lacks the chops to fully ratchet up story tension.

KOOKLA C too much of a tween movie for adults Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/11/24 Full Review SkyRo P The film "Trust" delivers a powerful and unsettling experience that leaves a knot in your stomach. Throughout the viewing, I found myself torn between my desire to keep watching and the unsettling nature of the story. Ultimately, I was eager to see justice served and for the perpetrator to face consequences. The plot centers around a young girl who becomes the target of a 35-year-old man posing as a teenager. He manipulates and grooms her into engaging in sexual acts, all while maintaining a facade of being much younger. It’s later revealed that he is a school teacher from another state who has a troubling history of similar offenses. While the film makes it clear that this man has a pattern of predatory behavior, it falls short of providing a satisfying resolution. Despite the involvement of FBI agents who highlight his criminal history, the story concludes without any real accountability for the offender. This lack of a definitive ending left me feeling unsettled, as it seemed to reflect a grim reality without offering closure. Overall, while "Trust" is a decent film, it doesn’t rise to blockbuster status and is not something I would choose to revisit. It's certainly not suitable for children, given the disturbing subject matter and the harrowing experiences faced by the young protagonist. Watching her struggle is truly heartbreaking. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/25/24 Full Review Audience Member This was intense, emotional and speaks to a different perspective. The cast made it better. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/07/24 Full Review AFAN O A hard to watch film about a sexual predator who assaults a teenager. The father and the daughter give extremely powerful performances through out. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/22/22 Full Review Audience Member It's a curious case of a serious filmmaker being tasked with making a feature film that almost seems to serve as a long narrative-based educational video about the real dangers of the internet. In other words, it's the most cinematic and well-acted PSA-feature film hybrid of all time. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Very Lifetime-ish only with multiple big names, it does make some strides to shake that feel but not by much.
